The development of systems analysis has provided a valuable tool for the planning of harvesting operations. These are operations in which labour has been progressively replaced by machinery, a trend requiring increasingly heavy capital investment. The capital involved and the complexity of the complete operation from field to grain store demand decision at a higher level than a hunch. Systems analysis, as practised in the Netherlands, reduces the uncertainty in the decisions involved.
