BackgroundTelepsychiatry takes advantage of modern communication technologies and new forms of patient–doctor and doctor–patient contact.ObjectiveThis research focuses on the knowledge of telepsychiatry and the attitude to it among patients and psychiatrists in Poland.Subject and methodsAn anonymous survey was conducted among 105 psychiatrists aged 26–74, including 74 women and 31 men and 102 patients aged 21–79, including 61 women and 41 men.ResultsResearch reveals that the majority of patients never met with the concept of “epsychiatry” and do not know what it means. However, more than 50% of respondents answered positively to every question considering the utility of telepsychiatry. Furthermore according to 18%, it is possible to replace an eye-to-eye conversation by videoconferencing. Only 15% of doctors claim to have an extensive knowledge on telepsychiatry, and 10% do not know what it means. The vast majority of physicians perceive positive aspects of this method of medical care, but 63% would not want any general insertion of telepsychiatry. Doctors are apprehensive of losing personal data and medical confidentiality, and of the necessity of legal changes.ConclusionsThe obtained results allow us to conclude that Polish patients and doctors, regardless of their knowledge, age, gender or disease, perceive advantages of telepsychiatry. In connection with this, implementing this method into the Polish medical market makes sense and is in accordance with both patients’ and doctors’ opinion. Based on our research, we confirmed that there is a necessity of wider popularisation of telepsychiatry among Polish therapists.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.
IntroductionToday telemedicine is a very popular and rapidly growing area, which allows the treatment, regardless of the distance between the patient and doctor. We present the latest research, conducted amongst polish doctors about the usefulness of telemedicine as a therapeutic tool in different medical specialties. Objectives and aimsThe aim of the study was to examine doctors’ attitude to telemedicine and usefulness of Platform ‘Moneo’ in the therapy of the areas other than psychiatry.MethodsThe first part was the polish telemedical project (grant no. POIG.01.04.00–04–219/12) conducted to assess medical Platform ‘Moneo’. It was based on a questionnaire filled by participants in scale 1 to 5. The second study based on authors’ anonymous questionnaires was distributed amongst 105 psychiatrists from Poland.ResultsEverybody noticed advantages of medical platform. The Platform's functionalities, rated as the best by healthcare directors were: educational materials, appointment and therapy planning. Managers indicated parts, which could be improved in e-prescribing system, the process of collecting information about hospitalizations and operations. Functionalities indicated by doctors as desirable to increase the utility of the platform is e-prescribing system, reporting side effects, planning visits, educational materials. In study addressed to psychiatrists, only 15% of them claimed to have an extensive knowledge on telepsychiatry, but they had confirmed the potential of telemedicine in psychiatry.ConclusionTelemedicine is a useful method, which can improve quality of healthcare services and make an access to it possible for some people. However, lots of improvements in telemedical services are needed to make it an efficient medical tool.
Objective: Telepsychiatry is a new method of providing medical care with the use of modern communication technologies. The objective of this study was to examine patient`s knowledge about the term 'telepsychiatry' and to check their opinion about this way of contacting with a doctor. Methods: To achieve this, the anonymous survey has been carried out on a group of 64 patients aged 24-77. 40 women and 24 men participated in the study, all of them were treated in different clinical settings of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in Katowice, Poland. Results: Preliminary results show, that the majority of respondents have never heard of that term and do not know what it means. However, to every question concerning the utility of telepsychiatry (e.g. 'Can doctor's contact with patient via video connections be helpful in actual well-being assessment?') more than half of the participants gave a positive answer. 58 % of patients acknowledged, that doctor's contact with the patient via video connection could be complementary to the eye-to-eye conversation, but it could not replace it. What is interesting, people aged 25-49 as well as women are more prone to reply 'I don't know. Additionally, outpatient and day psychotherapy ward participants seem to be less willing to attribute positive characteristics to telepsychiatry. Conclusions: Respondents, regardless of their education, age, gender or diagnose, perceive telepsychiatry advantages. In connection with that, implementing this method into Polish medical service seems to be useful and is in accordance with patients opinion.
Background: Telemedicine is an interesting area of modern treatment. It enables contact between patients and doctors at long distance. In this paper, we present the latest studies, conducted among Polish doctors about the utility of the telemedicine as a therapeutic tool. Methods: One of the methods was an anonymous questionnaire presented to psychiatrists from Poland (105 physicians). The second study was based on a questionnaire filled by participants (scale: 1-inappropriate to 5-very useful). It was part of the Polish Telemedical Project (grant no.POIG.01.04.00-04-219/12) conducted to assess medical Platform ‘Moneo’ in the therapy of the areas other than psychiatry. Results: All healthcare institutions noticed advantages of Medical Platform. The Platform’s functionalities, rated as the best by healthcare directors were: educational materials, appointment and therapy planning. Managers indicated parts which could be improved in e-prescribing system, the process of collecting information about hospitalizations, operations. Functionalities regarded by doctors as desirable in improving the platform include: e-prescribing system, reporting side effects, planning visits, educational materials. In the psychiatrists' study, they had confirmed the potential of telemedicine in psychiatry. They chose mood and neurotic disorders as the most adequate for that treatment. However, 60% of doctors would not widen the implementation of telepsychiatry in Poland. Probably it is due to their awareness for the need of new software, legal and refunding system. Conclusion: Telemedicine is a useful method for specialists and directors. It can improve quality of healthcare services. However, lots of improvements in telemedical services are needed to make it a miraculous cure for everything.
