Power line communication, that is, using the electricity infrastructure for data transmission, is experiencing a renaissance in the context of Smart Grid. Smart Grid objectives include the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources into the electricity supply chain, securing reliable electricity delivery, and using the existing electrical infrastructure more efficiently. This paper surveys power line communications (PLCs) in the context of Smart Grid. The specifications G3-PLC, PRIME, HomePlug Green PHY, and HomePlug AV2, and the standards IEEE 1901/1901.2 and ITU-T G.hn/G.hnem are discussed.
The fifth-generation (5G) of cellular communications is expected to be deployed in the next years to support a wide range of services with different demands of peak data rates, latency and quality of experience (QoE). In this work, we propose a novel approach for radio network dimensioning (RND), named as Heuristic RND (HRND), which uses real open data in the network dimensioning process. This procedure, named as NetDataDrilling, provides the dimensioning target area by means of network data selection and visualization from the existing infrastructure. Moreover, the proposed NetDimensioning heuristic considers the necessary parameters of numerology and bandwidth parts (BWP) supported by New Radio (NR) to provide a balanced network design mediating among the requirements of coverage, capacity, QoE and cost. The proposed HRND is based on the novel quality of experience (QoE) parameter ζ by probabilistically characterizing the 5G radio resource control (rrc) states to ensure the availability of peak data rates for the MNO's required percentage of the time. The simulation results show the fulfilment of QoE and load balancing parameters with significant cost savings compared to the conventional RND methodology.INDEX TERMS 5G, new radio, cellular network dimensioning, network data, capacity model.
Abstract-We present a cross-layer resource-allocation (RA) scheme for the downlink in orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (OFDMA) systems with fairness control among the users, where the resources to be allocated are power, bits per symbol, and subchannels. The use of subchannels, which are defined as group of subcarriers, leads to reducing the complexity of the bandwidth allocation compared with the commonly adopted subcarrier allocation. A goodput-based optimization function, which is derived by combining automatic repeat request (ARQ) and physical (PHY)-layer parameters, is used to perform RA for applications that demand error-free transmissions. Two transmission strategies are considered, with and without concatenation of subchannels, for which two different RA methods are developed, respectively. We also propose an algorithm that improves the complexity associated to both concatenation and nonconcatenation schemes, without appreciable performance loss.Index Terms-Automatic repeat request (ARQ), cross-layer resource allocation (RA), fairness, goodput, multiuser orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), subchannel.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
