The author investigates the potentialities of the application of analogue and digital computers in chemical engineering. He outlines the importance of electronic computers in all stages, beginning with basic research, development of chemical processes, planning of production machinery and of its running. The same applies to the distribution, the finishing and the final checking of the products and also to the generation and distribution of power. However, the application of a computer does not always supply 'automatically' the solution of the problem under consideration and it is, therefore, necessary in each individual case to study from the technical as also the economical angle, whether the employment of such a computer is justified. The limits for the application of computers, particularly with respect to direct digital control (DDC), are to a large extent determined by the reliability of the equipment and availability of trained staff for running them. This article is based mainly upon practical experience and upon results obtained with computers in process control and control engineering.
