European earwigs (Forficula auricularia L.) were fed in the laboratory with either damson‐hop aphids (Phorodon humuli (Schrank)) or lettuce. Earwigs ate both aphids and lettuce equally well. Older earwigs ate more aphids than young ones. The growth rates for adult earwigs fed with earwigs and lettuce were similar, but the conversion ratio of those fed with lettuce was lower.
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG
DER GEMEINE OHRWURM (FORFICULA AURICULARIA) ALS EIN ERFOLGREICHER PRÄDATOR DER HOPFENLAUS (PHORODON HUMULI) I. FÜTTERUNGSVERSUCHE
Late‐season strawberries have suffered severe fruit distortion in several areas of the UK leading to downgrading of the fruit and financial loss to growers. In trials in 1984 and 1986 in Kent and Cheshire, frequent sprays of pyrethroid insecticides significantly reduced the percentage of distorted fruits. The distortion was attributed to the feeding of various species of thrips, including Thrips atratus, T. major and Frankliniella intonsa.
