Este artigo trata-se de um estudo reflexivo que tem como objetivo discutir a prática da sedação em pacientes com câncer que estão sob cuidados paliativos. Apesar de ser uma temática pouco abordada, esta discussão torna-se pertinente devido às angústias que incita em todos os profissionais envolvidos no cuidado deste paciente. Inicia-se o estudo com a definição de alguns conceitos encontrados em literatura científica sobre a sedação, o processo de morte / morrer, cuidados paliativos em Oncologia e eutanásia. A seguir, se faz uma inter-relação entre estes conceitos para sua implementação no contexto de cuidado ao paciente com câncer. Por fim, considera-se que o ato de sedar um paciente com câncer em fase terminal, deve ser avaliado quanto aos benefícios e/ou malefícios, valorizando a percepção da família e, se possível, do próprio paciente sobre esta prática.
