one person, with authority and responsibility to take action on the result. More and more decisions fall into a gray area, where lines are dashed and predictions hedged and processes nonlinear. If A, then maybe B, but if C happens, forget B and hope for D if we can avoid E, F, and G and all H doesn't break loose. More and more decisions are made by groups, whose members have individual inputs, individual opinions on the probabilities of the impact of potential events, and individual views of the outcome.Group decision-making, however, can be inefficient and time consuming. At best, that is; at worst it is ineffective and counterproductive. If some members dominate the group through force of position or personality, their input will dominate the decision-making process and hence the decision. Members who are quiet by nature, reticent because of their position in the group (real or perceived), or preoccupied by other concerns will have little effect on the process; their potentially valuable contributions will be lost.Even in an ideal situation, where each member of the group makes an equal contribution to the process, the result can be chaotic. How can the evaluations of 12 team members on 16 questions on a score of 1 to 10 be organized into a basis for business decisions involving millions of dollars? Quickly, that is, because we have to know tomorrow or the deal is off! ABSTRACTA computerized group decision support system has been developed to collect and reduce data representing group members' individual evaluations of options available for action. The system uses barcode voting sheets or individual keypads for data input, and outputs results to a standard spreadsheet program, for creation of histograms, or to a word processing program, for real-time report writing. Extensive use of the system has shown that it saves time and money, and that the quality of decisions reached by the group is much improved. The system also fosters total participation and, ultimately, "buy-in" to the programs which result from the decision-making process.,
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
