Summary: Résumé: Zusammenfassung Sand‐culture techniques for determining the tolerance of fruit crops to herbicides applied to the roots were investigated. Of the methods examined, a single application to pots with a closed drainage system was the most useful provided they were protected from rain. A semi‐automatic system for applying herbicides was developed for use where repeated treatment was required. Visual scoring of plant condition was the most informative method of assessing response and was reliable. Results correlated well with weight measurements of leaves, shoots or whole plants. For each herbicide ED50 values were derived from dose‐response curves and used to express relative tolerance. The slopes of these curves provided an indication of the rate of change of response with dose. The relative tolerance of a range of fruit crops to simazine corresponded to known relative tolerance in field conditions in the U.K. It is concluded that sand‐culture techniques can be used as a preliminary screen to find new soil‐acting herbicides for perennial crops and to detect differences in tolerance between cultivars. They also enable the direct influence of plant and seasonal factors on response to root‐applied herbicides to be studied. Large numbers of treatments can be tested in a small area with the certainty of obtaining positive results. Convolvulus arvensis is the most important species of bindweed in Britain. Established plants spread by means of lateral roots: establishment from seed and fragments of the underground growth is not important. The hormone weedkillers like 2,4-D and MCPA give good control in the year of treatment. With the correct dose and timing there is also good control in the year after treatment. Adding paraquat to 2,4-D reduces the effect in the year after treatment. Repeated annual treatment with high doses of chlorthiamid that prevent shoot growth for the entire season are no more effective against the underground growth than the standard dose of 2,4-D. Calystegia sepium spreads rapidly by rhizomes and stolons. It is more susceptible than C. arvensis to MCPB.
The history of the development of 'rope-wick' and comparable devices in North America and Europe is described. The range of designs is considered and their uses, advantages and disadvantages in large-scale farming are discussed. Some of the major problems against which they are used in large-scale farming should not arise in small-scale farming, but the various 'wipers' could be of value for certain uses, particularly the safe application of herbicides to perennial weeds growing above or between crop rows. Some other potential uses are also noted which would be economic because the devices are much cheaper than hand-held sprayers. Further developments in design are needed, however, to improve reliability of transfer of herbicide under varying conditions of climate and vegetation type.
