Roots of legumes establish symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and nodule-inducing rhizobia. The existing nodules systemically suppress subsequent nodule formation in other parts of the root, a phenomenon termed autoregulation. Similarly, mycorrhizal roots reduce further AMF colonization on other parts of the root system. In this work, split- root systems of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) were used to study the autoregulation of symbiosis with Sinorhizobium meliloti and the mycorrhizal fungus Glomus mosseae. It is shown that nodulation systemically influences AMF root colonization and vice versa. Nodules on one half of the split-root system suppressed subsequent AMF colonization on the other half. Conversely, root systems pre-colonized on one side by AMF exhibited reduced nodule formation on the other side. An inhibition effect was also observed with Nod factors (lipo-chito-oligosaccharides). NodSm-IV(C16:2, S) purified from S. meliloti systemically suppressed both nodule formation and AMF colonization. The application of Nod factors, however, did not influence the allocation of (14)C within the split-root system, excluding competition for carbohydrates as the regulatory mechanism. These results indicate a systemic regulatory mechanism in the rhizobial and the arbuscular mycorrhizal association, which is similar in both symbioses.

We investigated in the field the carbon (C) transfer between sugar maple (Acer saccharum) saplings and the spring ephemeral Erythronium americanum via the mycelium of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Sugar maple saplings and E. americanum plants were planted together in pots placed in the ground of a maple forest in 1999. Ectomycorrhizal yellow birches (Betula alleghaniensis) were added as control plants. In spring 2000, during leaf expansion of sugar maple saplings, the leaves of E. americanum were labelled with CO. Seven days after labelling, radioactivity was detected in leaves, stem and roots of sugar maples. Specific radioactivity in sugar maples was 13-fold higher than in yellow birches revealing the occurrence of a direct transfer of C between the AM plants. The quantity ofC transferred to sugar maple saplings was negatively correlated with the percentage of C allocated to the storage organ of E. americanum. A second labelling was performed in autumn 2000 on sugar maple leaves during annual growth of E. americanum roots. Radioactivity was detected in 7 of 22 E. americanum root systems and absent in yellow birches. These results suggest that AM fungi connecting different understorey species can act as reciprocal C transfer bridges between plant species in relation with the phenology of the plants involved.

In split-root systems of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), already existing nodules or arbuscular mycorrhizal roots suppress further establishment of symbiosis in other root parts, a phenomenon named autoregulation. Roots treated with rhizobial nodulation signals (Nod factors) induce a similar systemic suppression of symbiosis.In order to test the hypothesis that flavonoids play a role in this systemic suppression, split-root systems of alfalfa plants were inoculated on one side of the split-root system with Sinorhizobium meliloti or Glomus mosseae or were treated with Nod factor. HPLC-analysis of alfalfa root extracts from both sides of the splitroot system revealed a persistent local and systemic accumulation pattern of some flavonoids associated with the different treatments. The two flavonoids, formononetin and ononin, could be identified to be similarily altered after rhizobial or mycorrhizal inoculation or when treated with Nod factor.Exogenous application of formononetin and ononin partially restored nodulation and mycorrhization pointing towards the involvement of these two secondary compounds in the autoregulation of both symbioses.

M M A R YRoot-inducing (Ri) T-DKA transformed roots of carrot were used as the plant partner in a study of ^^P absorption and plasmalemma ATPase activity in the hyphae of the vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Gigaspora margarita Becker & Hall. Hyphae from germinating spores were grown in the presence or absence of root exudates and volatiles. In the presence of these root factors, ^-P isotope labelling occurred in hyphae, auxiliary cells and spores, while in the absence of these factors, the labelling only occurred in fungal spores. Similarly, ATPase activity appeared on the fungal plasmalemma only in the presence of root factors. The use of the .ATPase inhibitor, diethylstilbestrol, demonstrated the importance of plasmalemma ATPase in the stimulation of hyphal growth of this obligately biotrophic fungus.

Plant growth appears to be source-limited in cloudberry since a reduction in sink strength did not induce a reduction in photosynthetic activity. Non-floral ramets did not participate directly to fruit development. Developing leaves appear to compete with the developing fruit but the intensity of this competition could vary with the specific timing of the two organs. The rhizome appears to act both as a source but also potentially as a sink during fruit development. Further studies are needed to characterize better the complex role played by the rhizome in fruit C nutrition.
