Las hernias de disco H. D. como tal entidad clínica, no se describen hasta principios del siglo XX, a pesar de que ya Virchow • 2 en 1857 describe como hallazgo de autopsia una H. D. de etiología traumática : Lindblon refiere haber revisado publicaciones anteriores, una de ellas en Henle en 1856 y otra aún anterior en Weitbrecht en 1742, en las que aparecen grabados con roturas de los discos intervertebrales ; Kocher 23 en 1896 presenta un caso de desgarro traumático del disco L-2 -L-3 en un paciente que había sufrido una caída sobre los pies ; no obstante no se reconoce en estas publicaciones esta lesión como tal entidad anatomopatológica.Fueron Middleton y Teacher 31 en 1911 los que describen por primera vez la H. D. como entidad nosológica. refiriendo 2 casos de paraplejía flácida a consecuencia de un accidente. Los dos enfermos fallecieron, y en la autopsia. se halló un prolapso del disco intervertebral * Seminario sobre "Hernias de Disco" (Curso 1968-69) del Departamento de Cirugía (Resumen).
