Los residuos silicoaluminatos feldespáticos provenientes del procesamiento de caolín son caracterizados con la finalidad de determinar sus posibles aplicaciones. La reactividad térmica se realizó mediante calcinaciones a diferentes temperaturas en atmósfera de aire, desde los 200°C hasta los 1400°C. Se determinó el análisis químico, el porcentaje de masa perdida, densidad, análisis cristalográfico, superficie específica y análisis de la distribución de tamaño de partículas, ambas por difracción láser. Se pone en evidencia la transformación de los cristales debido a la descomposición térmica de algunas especies contenidas en el material. Se presenta una relación entre la pérdida de la masa y el incremento de la densidad. Se obtiene como producto final un composite de mullita y sílice como fases principales, sin la sinterización de los polvos. Los resultados ponen en evidencia que este material puede ser empleado como material refractario cuya resistencia térmica es superior a los 1400 °C.
