Resection arthroplasty of the patella has been found to be a satisfactory procedure for the treatment of patellofemoral pain caused by osteoarthritis. In the present series 60% of the operated cases were pain-free on a 31-month average follow-up. The patients found it easier to climb stairs and to kneel and in most cases the radiographic joint space was good.
The authors have used the open palm and digit technique for Dupuytren's contracture in fifty-four patients since May, 1973. The procedure consists in making transverse skin incisions on the palm and fingers leaving the wounds open after limited fasciectomy. The results have been surprisingly good due to the elimination of haematoma formation and finger oedema, and the excellent quality of the final scar.
The pathological mobility of the metacarpo-phalangeal joints of 100 patients affected by rheumatoid arthritis was studied, and the results were analysed and compared with the results obtained in a control non-rheumatoid group. This report seems to suggest that rheumatoid metacarpo-phalangeal joints become more lax the longer the rheumatoid disease has been present. However, when there is marked local involvement of the joint this hyperlaxity cannot be proven because of pain and/or mechanical blockage.
The authors report the appearance of a swan-neck deformity few months after arthrodesis of the distal interphalangeal joint. The pathomechanics, prevention and treatment of the established deformity are discussed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
