Summary Propionylpromazine and Meperidin for premedication of Thiopental‐narcosis in the horse The anaesthesiological and physiological parameters were studied after intravenous administration of propionylpromazine (0.05 mg/kg) alone or in combination with meperidin (1.5 mg/kg) as premedication of thiopental‐sodium‐narcosis (8 mg/kg) in 10 horses. It was observed that in the combined premedication with propionylpromazine‐meperidin a statistically significant prolongation of the operation‐effective narcosis stage of around 9.4 ± 1.44 minutes was achieved. The narcosis was restful and developed rapidly, analgesia and muscle relaxation were improved, the recovery phase was reduced by about 14 ± 5.90 min, and no excitement occurred following narcosis. The combined dosage caused a clear depression of respiration and an increased heart rate.
