Un processus de dépérissement forestier se développe en Europe du Nord et centrale depuis quelques années et il paraît de plus en plus légitime d'incriminer à ce propos-aucune démonstration rigoureuse n'en a été faite jusqu'à présent mais les preuves indirectes ne manquent pas-des phénomènes de pollution atmosphérique regroupés sous le terme global de précipitations acides » (incluant pluies, brouillards, neige, dépôts secs, etc. . .). L'existence d'une synergie avec d'autres facteurs d'affaiblissement de l'écosystème forestier (accidents climatiques, parasitisme,. .) est également suspectée. En France, les forêts des Vosges et du Jura sont maintenant concernées par ce problème, qui apparaît aussi, semble-t-il, en certains points du Massif Central et des Alpes du Nord. Des recherches sont actuellement en cours dans les Pyrénées centrales, dans un secteur où le Sapin-peut-être également le Hêtre-présente des signes de dépérissement comparables à ceux attribués par ailleurs aux précipitations acides. La présentation du secteur d'étude, la description des symptômes, les premières hypothèses envisagées ont fait l'objet d'une première publication (Chéret, 1984). On reprendra ici d'une façon synthétique ces données, et l'on insistera essentiellement sur les derniers résultats obtenus et sur l'évolution actuelle du dépérissement. Nous ne reviendrons pas sur le problème des précipitations acides en général et sur les différents modes d'action probables des polluants sur la végétation, on pourra se reporter pour cela aux articles regroupés dans le numéro spécial de la Revue forestière française (' Regards sur la santé de nos forêts vol. XXXVII, 1985), ainsi qu'aux dernières mises au point de Bouvarel (1984), Becker (1985) et Bonneau (1985 a et b).
