Operator‐propelled spray methods were compared for consistency of application under field‐plot conditions. A bicycle sprayer, backpack sprayer, backpack sprayer with a metronome set for normal pace, and the backpack sprayer with a metronome set for a modified pace were tested over two terrains by three operators. Coefficient of variation of application output revealed that an operator can apply pesticides using a backpack sprayer and a metronome with the same application consistency as a speedometer‐aided bicycle sprayer. When the metronome is used to modify pace, ground speed may have greater variance, but should be more consistent than backpack application without a metronome.
