Schon lange war es mir aufgefallen, dass, wenn man die nasse, gepresste Schiessbaumwolle, so wie sie für Torpedoladungen aufbewahrt wird, mit Wasser auszieht, man in den wässerigen Auszügen mit Leichtigkeit Calciumnitrat und Calciumnitrit anzeigen kann.Diese nasse Schiessbaumwolle enthält meistens 10 bis 15 Proc. Feuchtigkeit, und zur Erhöhung der Beständigkeit wird ihr bei der Fabrikation nach dem vollständigen Auswaschen der Säure l'/s bis 2'/s Proc. Kreide zugefügt mit der Absicht, jede Spur Säure, welche durch Selbstzersetzung der Schiessbaumwolle entstehen könnte und welche, einmal entstanden, die Selbstzersetzung sehr beschleunigen würde, sofort zu neutralisiren und auf diese Weise unschädlich zu machen.Das oben genannte Auftreten von Calciumnitrat und -nitrit in den wässerigen Auszügen beweist, dass wirklich ein Theil der Kreide verbraucht wird und das kann, meiner Ansicht nach, kein Wunder nehmen, wenn man bedenkt, dass die Schiessbaumwolle ein Salpetersäureester ist, dessen Zerfall in Alkohol und Säure unter dem Einfluss von Carbonaten in verdünnten Lösungen bewiesen ist und einer exothermen Reaction entspricht. Da nun erstens das Calciumcarbonat nicht ganz unlöslich in Wasser ist und zweitens durch den Kohlensäuregehalt des Wassers theilweise in Calciumbicarbonat umgesetzt wird, welches in Wasser leicht löslich ist, sind die Elemente für eine Verseifung der Schiessbaumwolle anwesend, und glaube ich, dass man anzunehmen hat, dass diese auch wirklich eintritt.Sollte man darum, wie dieses von Oscar G u t t m a n n betont wird (d. Z. 1897, 234), besser thun, keine Kreide zuzusetzen? Ich glaube es kaum, wenigstens nicht für den vorliegenden Fall der nassen Schiessbaumwolle. In dieser halte ich eine geringe Selbstzersetzung nimmer für ausgeschlossen, Ch. »8.
In dem Vortrage von Dr. J o n e s (d. Z. 1892, 474) über die Reinigung des Dampfkesselspeisewassers wird der Vorzug den Apparaten gegeben, mit welchen die Reinigung geschieht, bevor das Wasser in den Kessel gelangt, vor denjenigen, mit welchen die Reinigung im Kessel selbst stattfindet. Nach meinen Erfahrungen macht sich noch als Übelstand bemerkbar, wenn man das Wasser im Kessel zu reinigen versucht, dass die schwere Lösung der Reinigungsmittel sich nicht schnell genug mit dem Kesselwasser mischt, so dass die Wirkung nicht sofort ausgeübt wird und eine Prüfung auf den richtigen Zusatz der genannten Mittel ganz unmöglich ist. IQ der Pulverfabrik zu Muiden (Niederlande), wo für die Speisung des Dampfkessels nur ein für diesen Zweck sehr ungeeignetes Wasser zur Verfügung stand, wurde auf einen der Kessel ein Reinigungsapparat von Dervaux, bezogen von Hans R e i s e r t zu Köln, angebracht und die Reinigung des Wassers mit Ätznatron und Soda ausgeführt. Der Kessel war ein liegender von 10 m Länge und 2,12 m Durchmesser mit zwei Flammrohren von 0,815 m Durchmesser.
Die vielen BeschHftigungen meines Amtes haben mir keine Zeit gelassen, eher zu antworten auf die Kritik meiner Arbeiten von Herrn O s c a r G u t t m a n n in Heft 48 dieser Zeitschrift. Wenn ich jetzt zu einer Beantwortung komme, so muss ich anfangen rnit der Mittheilung, dass mir diese Kritik sehr willkommen war, weil sie nur zur Fiirderung der Sache, um welche es geht, dienen kann. -Der Ton hiitte zwar etwas angenehmer sein kiinnen, um so mehr Herr G u t t m a n n sich in einem Irrthum befindet, wenn er meint, dass meine Arbeiten hauptsiichlich gegen seine Ansichten gerichtet waren. I n meiner ersten Arbeit iiber die langsame Zersetzung der nassen Schiessbaumwolle habe ich, nur um anzudeuten, warum Versuche iiber den verseifenden Einfluss yon Calciumcarbonat mir wichtig schienen, entgegen seiner Ansicht die Meinung ausgesprochen, dass man besser thut, der nassen Schiessbaumwolle bei der Bewahrung etwas Kreide zuzusetzen , sonst kommt die ganze Arbeit rnit Versuchen, welche von Herrn G u t t m a n n ausgefiihrt sind, gar nicht in Beriihrung. In der zweiten Abhandlung iiber die Stabilitiitsproben habe ich mich ganz seiner Ansicht angeschlossen, dass der Abeltest fiir die Beurtheilung der Stabilitiit keinen Werth hat, und nus in der Ersetzung dieser Probe durch eine andere gehen wir auseinander.Was jetzt die Frage angeht, ob es wiinschenswerth ist, der nassen Schiessbaumwolle bei der Aufbewahrung Kreide zuzusetzen, so muss ich gestehen, dass ich durch die Kritik des Herrn G u t t m a n n nicht von der Irrigkeit meiner Ansichten iiberzeugt bin. Herr G u t t m a n n stellt meiner Behauptung, dass ich eine geringe Selbstzersetzung in der nassen Schiessbaumwolle nicht fiir ausgeschlossen halte, nur Behauptungen, aber keine Versuche entgegen, und eo lange dieses nicht der Fall ist, bleibe ich der Meinung, dass gerade bei der nassen Schiessbaumwollc solch eine geringe Selbstzersetzung zu fiirchten ist, weil auch das Wasser allein einen verseifenden Einfluss ausiiben kann. Schliigt man z. B. das Lehrbuch von V i c t o r M e y e r und P a u l J a c o b s o n auf S. 200 auf, so findet man dort 01s allgemeine Charakteristik der zusammengesetzten Ather angegeben: ,,Die Ester kiinnen mehr oder Ch. 99. weniger leicht wieder in Alkohol und Saure gespalten werden, z. B.: CnHzn + 1 0 . NOS + H,O = Cn H z~ + I . OH + OH. NO,;dieser sog. Verseifungsprocess tritt zuweilen schon durch Einwirknng von Wasser bei gewBhnlicher oder wenig erhiihter Temperatur, stets beim Kochen mit Alkalien ein". Zufiillig wird hier gerade als Beispiel ein Salpetersiiureester gewiihlt, wozu die Schiessbaumwolle auch gehiirt, und man wird hieraus ersehen, dass ich wohl einigen Grund habe, um eine Selbstzersetzung der nassen Schiessbaumwolle zu fiirchten. Dazu kommt noch, dass ich schon seit Jahren eine Probe vollkommen reiner Nitroglycerine unter reinem destillirten Wasser bei gewiihnlicher Temperatur bewahre. Jedes Jahr war das Wasser in geringer Menge sauer geworden, so dass eine geringe Verseifung der Nitroglycerine stattgefunden hatte; jedes Ma1 habe ...
