AbstractAn experimental work was carried out to assess the volumetric behaviour of three clayey soils (loam, marl, kaolinite)
The Authors give the results of ten years' research done at the University of Grenoble on the problem of deep foundations. In the case of a pile penetrating in a granular medium, two regions are considered. First, when the depth is smaller than a critical depth the bearing capacity of the point of the pile increases more rapidly than the depth. The Paper explains this increase by the friction produced by the upward movement of the soil when the penetration of the pile increases. The Authors give a mathematical expression for the bearing capacity of the point of the pile. Second, when the critical depth is reached, the bearing capacity of the point of the pile becomes constant. This can be explained by the compression of the soil under the pile—the critical density of soil under the point of the pile becomes higher than that of the surrounding material. A method for the calculation of this constant value is proposed by the Authors. The value of the lateral friction divided by the surface of the pile remains constant when the critical depth is reached; a method for the calculation of this limit is given. In this Paper the proposed methods of calculation are compared with data obtained from experiments on granular media (rollers, glass spheres and sand).
