Because of its unique physical properties, graphene, a 2D honeycomb arrangement of carbon atoms, has attracted tremendous attention. Silicene, the graphene equivalent for silicon, could follow this trend, opening new perspectives for applications, especially due to its compatibility with Si-based electronics. Silicene has been theoretically predicted as a buckled honeycomb arrangement of Si atoms and having an electronic dispersion resembling that of relativistic Dirac fermions. Here we provide compelling evidence, from both structural and electronic properties, for the synthesis of epitaxial silicene sheets on a silver (111) substrate, through the combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in conjunction with calculations based on density functional theory.

Multilayer silicene, the silicon analogue of multilayer graphene, grown on silver (111) surfaces, possesses a honeycomb (ͱ3 Â ͱ3)R30 reconstruction, observed by scanning tunnelling microscopy at room temperature, past the initial formation of the dominant, 3Â3 reconstructed, silicene monolayer. For a few layers silicene film we measure by synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy, a cone-like dispersion at the Brillouin zone centre due to band folding. p* and p states meet at $0.25 eV below the Fermi level, providing clear evidence of the presence of gapless Dirac fermions. The Sn͞Ge(111) interface has been investigated across the 3 3 3 ! p 3 3 p 3 R30 ± phase transition using core level and valence band photoemission spectroscopies. We find, both above and below the transition, two different components in the Sn 4d core level and a band splitting in the surface state crossing the Fermi energy. Theoretical calculations show that these two effects are due to the existence of two structurally different kinds of Sn atoms that fluctuate at room temperature between two positions and are stabilized in a 3 3 3 structure at low temperature. Two-dimensional layered MoS2 shows great potential for nanoelectronic and optoelectronic devices due to its high photosensitivity, which is the result of its indirect to direct band gap transition when the bulk dimension is reduced to a single monolayer. Here, we present an exhaustive study of the band alignment and relativistic properties of a van der Waals heterostructure formed between single layers of MoS2 and graphene. A sharp, high-quality MoS2-graphene interface was obtained and characterized by micro-Raman spectroscopy, high-resolution X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HRXPS), and scanning high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (STEM/HRTEM). Moreover, direct band structure determination of the MoS2/graphene van der Waals heterostructure monolayer was carried out using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), shedding light on essential features such as doping, Fermi velocity, hybridization, and band-offset of the low energy electronic dynamics found at the interface. We show that, close to the Fermi level, graphene exhibits a robust, almost perfect, gapless, and n-doped Dirac cone and no significant charge transfer doping is detected from MoS2 to graphene. However, modification of the graphene band structure occurs at rather larger binding energies, as the opening of several miniband-gaps is observed. These miniband-gaps resulting from the overlay of MoS2 and the graphene layer lattice impose a superperiodic potential.

Abstract2D layered materials have emerged in recent years as a new platform to host novel electronic, optical, or excitonic physics and develop unprecedented nanoelectronic and energy applications. By definition, these materials are strongly anisotropic between the basal plane and cross the plane. The structural and property anisotropies inside their basal plane, however, are much less investigated. Black phosphorus, for example, is a 2D material that has such in‐plane anisotropy. Here, a rare chemical form of arsenic, called black‐arsenic (b‐As), is reported as a cousin of black phosphorus, as an extremely anisotropic layered semiconductor. Systematic characterization of the structural, electronic, thermal, and electrical properties of b‐As single crystals is performed, with particular focus on its anisotropies along two in‐plane principle axes, armchair (AC) and zigzag (ZZ). The analysis shows that b‐As exhibits higher or comparable electronic, thermal, and electric transport anisotropies between the AC and ZZ directions than any other known 2D crystals. Such extreme in‐plane anisotropies can potentially implement novel ideas for scientific research and device applications.

The interlayer coupling can be used to engineer the electronic structure of van der Waals heterostructures (superlattices) to obtain properties that are not possible in a single material. So far research in heterostructures has been focused on commensurate superlattices with a long-ranged Moiré period. Incommensurate heterostructures with rotational symmetry but not translational symmetry (in analogy to quasicrystals) are not only rare in nature, but also the interlayer interaction has often been assumed to be negligible due to the lack of phase coherence. Here we report the successful growth of quasicrystalline 30° twisted bilayer graphene (30°-tBLG), which is stabilized by the Pt(111) substrate, and reveal its electronic structure. The 30°-tBLG is confirmed by low energy electron diffraction and the intervalley double-resonance Raman mode at 1383 cm Moreover, the emergence of mirrored Dirac cones inside the Brillouin zone of each graphene layer and a gap opening at the zone boundary suggest that these two graphene layers are coupled via a generalized Umklapp scattering mechanism-that is, scattering of a Dirac cone in one graphene layer by the reciprocal lattice vector of the other graphene layer. Our work highlights the important role of interlayer coupling in incommensurate quasicrystalline superlattices, thereby extending band structure engineering to incommensurate superstructures.

The polaron is a quasi-particle formed by a conduction electron (or hole) together with its self-induced polarization in a polar semiconductor or an ionic crystal. Among various polarizable examples of complex oxides, strontium titanate (SrTiO3) is one of the most studied. Here we examine the carrier type and the interplay of inner degrees of freedom (for example, charge, lattice, orbital) in SrTiO3. We report the experimental observation of Fröhlich polarons, or large polarons, at the bare SrTiO3 surface prepared by vacuum annealing. Systematic analyses of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectra show that these Fröhlich polarons are two-dimensional and only exist with inversion symmetry breaking by two-dimensional oxygen vacancies. Our discovery provides a rare solvable field theoretical model, and suggests the relevance of large (bi)polarons for superconductivity in perovskite oxides, as well as in high-temperature superconductors.
