ResumenEl origen de la vida ha sido considerado como el problema científico más importante desde los albores de la ciencia. Para tratar de resolverlo se han elaborado diversas hipótesis que tuvieron inicio con la generación espontánea, sostenida por Aristóteles, que tuviera vigencia hasta 1864, cuando fue desacreditada por los experimentos de Pasteur.A partir de entonces surgieron las ideas acerca del origen químico de la vida, que diferían entre sí en el entorno geográfico considerado. Los primeros registros de tales ideas corresponden a Ernst Haeckel, en 1866, y a T.H. Huxley, en 1868; sin embargo, éstos han sido superados en popularidad por Darwin, quien enunciara la hipótesis, en 1871, de que la vida se hubiese originado en "una pequeña charca tibia". Más tarde, Oparin y Haldane, independientemente uno del otro, propusieron que la vida tuvo su inicio en el mar, en la zona cercana a su superficie o en sus orillas, a partir de un "caldo primordial", hipótesis que alcanzó una gran notoriedad a raíz del clásico experimento de Urey y Miller, en el que se efectuó la síntesis de aminoácidos, publicado en 1953.La hipótesis de la panspermia ("semillas en todas partes"), que proclama el origen extraterrestre de la vida, fue enunciada por Arrhenius en 1903. Esta corriente se ha visto reforzada recientemente por el descubrimiento tanto de supuestas formas de vida en meteoritos marcianos, como de la existencia de sustancias "orgánicas" complejas en el espacio sideral. La presencia de materia orgánica extraterrestre no es de sorprender, puesto que los elementos esenciales para la vida (C, H, O, N) se formaron desde las primeras etapas de la evolución del universo.En la actualidad, es la hipótesis hidrotermal la que debe considerarse como más factible debido a que la profundidad de los mares proporcionaba protección contra las condiciones adversas imperantes en la superficie en esa época, y a que la complejidad de los sistemas hidrotermales proporciona una gran variedad de condiciones que se consideran necesarias para que se haya originado la vida: permiten una gama más amplia de acidez-alcalinidad (pH) y de condiciones reductoras (Eh) que las aguas de los mares; presentan minerales con un extraordinario comportamiento químico, como el grupo de las zeolitas o las arcillas del grupo de la esmectita (montmorillonita); y están sujetos energía geotérmica, con lo cual se evita la influencia nociva de la radiación ultravioleta asociada a la energía solar; y presentan, como posible fuente alterna de energía, una gran diversidad de reacciones químicas exotérmicas, lo que pudiera ser aprovechado para el proceso de metabolismo.La hipótesis hidrotermal, por otra parte, no es ajena a la panspermia. ResumenEn el Boletín del Instituto de Geología está registrada una parte sustancial del desarrollo de la geología en México. Aunque hacia fi nales del siglo XIX ya existía una literatura geológica relativamente abundante, en particular sobre los distritos mineros, ésta carecía tanto de exactitud como del sufi ciente rigor científi co. Ante esta situación, Antonio del Castillo propuso, y perseveró hasta su consecución, la creación de un organismo gubernamental, el Instituto Geológico de México, que se encargara de la investigación geológica del territorio nacional, bajo la doble perspectiva de ciencia pura y aplicada, con un nivel científi co adecuado para terminar con la confusión reinante. Mientras el Congreso de la Unión analizaba la iniciativa presidencial sobre la nueva institución que le fuera enviada con fecha del 26 de mayo de 1886, el presidente Porfi rio Díaz emitió en el mes de marzo de 1888 un decreto por el que se formaba una Comisión Geológica que tendría un carácter temporal. Ésta tuvo un período de vida muy corto, ya que el 17 de diciembre del mismo año se obtuvo la autorización del Congreso y al día siguiente se emitió el decreto presidencial que fundaba ofi cialmente el Instituto, el que tuviera vigencia a partir del día 25 de ese mes, cuando fue publicado en el Diario Ofi cial de la Federación.Siguiendo el rumbo original trazado por A. del Castillo, el Boletín del Instituto de Geología ha puesto al servicio tanto de la ciencia como de la industria los estudios de la naturaleza del territorio nacional, desde (1) su constitución en unidades cronoestratigráfi cas en el primer texto explicativo de una carta geológica, (2) la fauna y fl ora que particularizan dichas unidades en relación con la estratigrafía, (3) la petrología de las rocas ígneas, (4) monografías geológicas regionales, (5) la descripción de los principales distritos mineros y de su potencial económico, (6) la bibliografía geológica y minera, (6) los primeros estudios sismológicos, (7) los primeros estudios sobre los yacimientos petroleros, (8) estudios geohidrológicos, (9) los catálogos de las especies minerales, (10) espeleología, (11) mineralogía, (12) geoquímica, (13) geología marina, (14) sedimentología, (15) paleogeografía, (16) tectónica, (17) geología metamórfi ca, y (18) geología ambiental, entre otros temas. Esta riqueza de tópicos cubiertos fue resultado del enfoque global que sobre la geología tenía la institución; en la actualidad, varios de ellos ya no forman parte de las líneas de investigación de la misma. Lo anterior es porque, debido a la tendencia a la especialización, el Instituto de Geología ha dado origen, por lo menos de manera parcial, a otras instituciones que se ocupan del estudio de dichas disciplinas de una manera específi ca: Petróleos Mexicanos, el Comité Directivo para la Investigación de los Recursos Minerales (el actual Servicio Geológico Mexicano), el Instituto de Geofísica, el Centro de Ciencias del Mar y Limnología, y el Centro de Geociencias, las últimas tres también pertenecientes a la Universidad...
