Adsorption / CO on Co/silica and Co¡Aerasti / Degrees of reduction / InfraredThe adsorption of CO on Co/silica and Co/Aerosil with different degrees of reduction was studied by infrared technique. High frequency bands observed in the range 2200 -2140 cm-1 were attributed to CO adsorbed on Co2+ ions in the neighbourhood of the support. While on Co/silica two ionic carbonyl species are present only one could be detected on Co/Aerosil. The frequency of the ionic species shows a weak red shift with increasing CO pressure which can be explained by indirect interaction. In the medium frequency region on Co/Aerosil only weak bands of linear carbonyls are discernible. The more intense band at 2070 cm-1 on Co/silica has been assigned to a linear CO species more or less perturbed by the environment. Its frequency shift with degree of reduction and CO pressure can be explained by applying the concept ofback-donation ; dipole-dipole interaction and direct interaction also may be involved. Bands appearing in the low frequency region between 1680 -1720 cm"1 could not be attributed to distinct species. As they display no isotopie shift upon admission of 13CO the carbon atom cannot be involved in the vibrating group.
