A utilização de combustíveis fósseis tem resultado em intensos impactos ambientais que suscitam a necessidade de desenvolver fontes de energia renováveis. Uma excelente alternativa é o desenvolvimento de fontes de energia e de produção de bens que não dependam de matérias-primas fósseis, sendo a produção de biolubrificantes a partir de matéria-prima renovável exemplo dessas alternativas. Este trabalho consistiu na produção de biolubrificantes a partir de óleo de soja residual, oriundo de um Restaurante Universitário no Campus Cuité da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande. Os materiais envolvidos no processo foram caracterizados através de suas propriedades físico-químicas. A epoxidação mostrou-se eficiente, pois o biolubrificante obtido nesta reação apresentou bom índice de iodo e elevado índice de oxigênio oxirano. O aumento da viscosidade cinemática a 40ºC em relação ao éster metílico deve-se ao fato da presença de moléculas de hidroxilas no produto epoxidado. A produção de lubrificantes biodegradáveis poderá ajudar de forma significativa na diminuição do impacto ambiental do uso de materiais fósseis para produção de lubrificantes, bem como do lançamento de óleo residual no meio ambiente.
