A insuficiência renal em equinos, em comparação com afecções dos sistemas digestivo e locomotor, é incomum, mas quando ocorre pode causar danos severos, se tratando de uma doença grave e que pode convergir em descompensação urêmica e caquexia, levando o animal a óbito. A afecção pode ter diversas origens, como nas infecções bacterianas, intoxicação por medicamentos e pode ser secundária à choque. Seu curso também é variável, podendo se desenvolver de forma aguda e evoluir para o quadro crônico, caracterizado pela perda progressiva de néfrons. O objetivo dessa revisão é apresentar pontos importantes da insuficiência renal em equinos, incluindo a anatomia e fisiologia da região, aspectos específicos do desenvolvimento da doença, diagnóstico e tratamento.
