Las artes escénicas contemporáneas favorecen la intermedialidad, la hibridación y el diálogo entre múltiples medios y lenguajes. Con la expansión de la tecnología digital, las artes en vivo experimentan nuevas posibilidades que, a menudo, afectan directamente a la misma ontología del teatro. En este artículo se pretende ahondar concretamente en la noción de espacio escénico y detectar los aspectos que más se han transformado respecto a la noción tradicional del espacio, un espacio que hasta ahora se ha basado principalmente en la copresencia de los sujetos participantes (público y performers). A través del análisis de diversas obras escénicas, se muestra cuáles son las aportaciones del medio digital en lo referente a la cuestión espacial y de cómo estas nuevas posibilidades determinan los procesos de recepción y experiencia estética. Para el conocimiento de este paradigma actual se evidencia la necesidad de ampliar el análisis a los discursos en torno a la intermedialidad que estimulen nuevas perspectivas y maneras de acercarnos al objeto de estudio.
