Our study presents a methodological proposal for the practice of judo as a viable, alternative exercise method to improve the health of older men and seniors. Bibliographic survey was utilized to analyze the results. A number of studies attempt to adapt the practice of judo to enhance different health variables in middle-aged and elderly men. The proposal of adapting judo methodology to older men was conceived based on these studies. The methodological proposal presented in this study corroborates the health and quality of life needs of judo enthusiasts, in addition to providing an opportunity for exercise that is normally appealing to men. In this respect, the methodological adaptations described in the present study may be an effective and viable way to prevent disease, maintain and promote health and quality of life, applying an exercise method that uses adapted judo training.
Considering the complexity of judo and the ample energy and neuromuscular demands, a whole process of competitive preparation must be directed to different physical capacities allowing the athlete to perform his combat actions with the best suitability possible. Mapping the behaviour of a judo athlete from observations of behaviour units in a real fighting situation would be a way of trying to identify the best topography or the best "aptitude" to achieve victory. The present investigation analysed the judo from the interactions of a real competition situation, aiming to verify, between winners and losers, possible differences or correlations between anthropometric parameters, motor performance and functional behaviours in a competitive situation. The results showed that: a) the experience is decisive between winning or losing; b) leg techniques are the most used between winners and losers, and losers use them more frequently; c) there are different strategies between fights; d) The energy cost in judo depends on the configuration of the fights. It is believed that such results can help coaches and athletes in guiding and rationalizing the training process in relation to performance determinants in judo.
Hand Grip Strength and Flexibility in Male Judo and Jiu-Jitsu AthletesIntroduction: Combat sports involving dominating the opponent, such as judo and jiu-jitsu, have some characteristics common to them. Among them, the maintenance of small distance between opponents to perform the dynamics of the fight and the requirement of specific motor actions to perform movements to grab, push and immobilize in short time. Objective: To compare the manual grip strength and flexibility of judo and jiu-jitsu athletes in order to identify possible neuromuscular differences in such modalities. Methods: A cross-sectional and observational study was carried out in which 33 male athletes, ranging from 18 to 30 years old, were recruited for convenience and divided into two groups according to judo and Jiu-jitsu. The athletes were submitted to anthropometric measurements of body mass, height and Body Mass Index (BMI) and hand grip strength (HGS) motor tests and flexibility. The comparison between the groups was performed by one-way ANOVA for each item (p<0.05).Results: The groups presented values very close, with higher values for both BMI and HGS in JD athletes and flexibility in JJ athletes. Statistical analysis demonstrated that there is a significant difference only for the item flexibility. Conclusion: HGS did not differ significantly between JD and JJ athletes. As for flexibility, JJ athletes present values statistically superior to JD athletes. The results were discussed.
