En las páginas siguientes expongo al lector una breve reseña histórica del convento San Agustín de Badajoz, su fundación, vida de la comunidad y supresión definitiva; así como todas las gestiones que se llevaron a cabo hasta que la antigua iglesia conventual se convirtió en la sede de la parroquia de Santa María la Real. El estudio, basado fundamentalmente en documentos inéditos, nos revela muchos aspectos relevantes de los que significó esta fundación agustiniana en la ciudad de Badajoz.
RESUMEN:A lo largo de estas páginas, pretendo ofrecer al lector una aportación que le permita conocer los aspectos económicos del convento San Agustín de Cádiz (1750 -1835), regentado por los agustinos calzados. Como todos los monasterios de la época, fue dueño de fincas rústicas y de cuantiosas propiedades urbanas, que con el correr de los años -hasta la llegada de las desamortizaciones -fueron aumentando en número, debido en parte a la mentalidad religiosa de la época y que hicieron necesaria una buena administración que garantizase la subsistencia conventual.
El convento de San Agustín de Segovia fue uno de los más emblemáticos de la ciudad castellana. Ubicado en el centro de la ciudad, a escasos metros de la catedral y de la Plaza Mayor, tuvo un vigoroso pasado hasta la época de las desamortizaciones decimonónicas, las cuales hicieron desaparecer todo un legado histórico, religioso y cultural. Esta casa religiosa fue propietaria de gran cantidad de bienes (rústicos, urbanos, artísticos…), tónica común entodos los cenobios de aquella época y de los que son testigos privilegiados los inventarios de bienes realizados por los gobiernos liberales de la primera mitad del siglo XIX. De su lectura detallada se puede apreciar cómo el cenobio mencionado y la comunidad de frailes agustinos que vivió en sus claustros, fue receptora de un impresionante patrimonio consecuencia de la marcada religiosidad de las gentes coetáneas a esta fundación.
