A maioria dos materiais sofrem expansão ou dilatação térmica quando aquecidos. Na literatura, referente ao assunto, encontramos facilmente, modelos matemáticos que possibilitam calcular a expansão desses materiais, no entanto, não se encontra com facilidade modelos que permitam calcular o tempo necessário que um determinado material que se dilatou x unidades de medida, leva para voltar ao seu comprimento inicial, após retirar a fonte de calor que o aquece e deixá-lo em contato apenas com a temperatura ambiente. Assim sendo, o objetivo principal deste trabalho é propor um modelo matemático que descreve a relação entre as variáveis, tempo, temperatura e comprimento. Para isso, buscou-se acoplar o modelo de dilatação linear ao modelo de resfriamento de Newton. Para desenvolver este estudo optou-se por seguir o método de pesquisa experimental. Inicialmente foi analisado se o material utilizado durante os experimentos satisfazia a lei do resfriamento de Newton. Em seguida buscou-se acoplar os dois modelos supracitados e por último, foi feita a validação do modelo encontrado. Dessa forma, conclui-se que as simulações numéricas realizadas apresentaram uma boa aproximação da situação real.
