Etimológicamente, leucorrea significa "flujo blanco" y se refiere al color que más frecuentemente encontramos, ya sea relatado por las enfermas o en el examen de las secreciones genitales.
El sistema de educación de las embarazadas que conduce a eliminar el dolor del trabajo del parto, tan difundido ya en todo el país, se ha visto y se verá cada día más amenazado en primer lugar por su laboriosa preparación, que exige del médico el sacrificio de una gran parte de las horas de su agitado y cada vez más difícil ejercicio profesional y en segundo lugar por la falta de interés que demuestran las pacientes condicionadas en embarazos anteriores y en quienes el éxito del método en su parto las hace dudar de la necesidad de un nuevo condicionamiento creyendo obtener el mismo resultado sin concurrir a la preparación colectiva.
A raíz del curso sobre métodos sicofísicos para el parto indoloro dictado en la Clínica Palermo de Bogotá, y de los trabajos sobre estos temas presentados al III Congreso Colombiano de Obstetricia y Ginecología reunido en Ibagué, en 1957, empezamos a interesarnos en la aplicación del método, y aisladamente y supeditado a las dificultades del medio uno de nosotros (Isaías Arenas Buenahora) obtiene buenos resultados en dos casos de su clientela privada atendidm; en los meses de Junio y Diciembre de 1958.
Hace aproximadamente 250 años se están haciendo ensayos tendientes a reducir el trabajo del parto y los esfuerzos maternos durante el mismo por medio de tracciones aplicadas a la cabeza del feto. Así vemos que el fórceps fué inventado por la Familia Chamberlin a principios del Siglo XVII, y muchas variedades de este instrumento están actualmente en uso en las maternidades del mundo entero.
Se estudia el líquido amniótico, obtenido por punción vía vaginal en 100 mujeres con embarazo a término, en trabajo de parto.
Se determina colesterol, fosfolípidos, triglicéridos y lípidos totales.
