La producción teatral bilingüe de Luís Vaz de Camões es menos conocida que otras partes de su obra como la famosa épica Os Lusíadas . De los estudios que se hicieron sobre ella, se estableció una postura crítica ampliamente aceptada respecto a la comicidad que atañe al uso dramático del castellano por los personajes secundarios en los autos camonianos. Ya que estos personajes participan en las partes culminantes de las obras teatrales, en este trabajo se propone examinar en más profundidad la función del castellano en el Auto dos Enfatriões , el Auto do Filodemo y el Auto de el-Rei Seleuco a luz de la teoría todoroviana del Otro para exponer cómo su presencia y su definición lingüística son primordiales para la construcción de una identidad propia de los personajes portugueses. El análisis de las relaciones entre los personajes que sólo hablan castellano y los demás personajes de los autos permite observar que Camões crea un espacio literario donde ambas lenguas coexisten y favorecen un intercambio cultural en que la contribución del otro no se percibe con desprecio. Sus obras dramáticas son más bien una muestra de la permeabilidad y compatibilidad de las culturas peninsulares.
