This article builds a case for a dynamic and flexible translation competence, with several subordinate competence components interacting in different constellations. A core element of the system proposed is (inter)cultural competence, given that poor (inter)cultural background is a common source of problems for translation students. To solve these, efforts are required at different levels, including declarative knowledge, skills and know-how, ‘existential’ competence and the ability to learn. Deficiencies at the level of declarative knowledge are relatively easy to cure. The three other types of competences are much harder to improve as they involve aspects of affect and behaviour. In order to realize these ambitious goals, the present article proposes a very concrete project. By bringing learners in contact with the international art scene in Brussels through work as translators for the <i>Kunstenfestivaldesarts</i>, both their intercultural competence and their motivation is increased. Such an approach breaks with obsolete models of teacher- and text-centred translation education. They are replaced by a learner-centred (inter)active approach and by real-life reception conditions which both stimulate learners and provide them with an opportunity to take their first steps in professional life.
The French spatial prepositionsur(‘on’) has recently developed new spatial usages. It has evolved from expressing a spatial configuration of superposition to also expressing extent and even a location which is merely relational. The aim of our study is to provide evidence for the hypothesis of the grammaticalization ofsur. This task is carried out by comparing these new spatial usages ofsurwith their Dutch translations. Eighteen attestated cases ofsurwere selected from a unilingual French corpus, which were then translated by ten native speakers of Dutch. The analysis of these translations showed, first of all, that the new uses ofsurare rendered by a wide range of Dutch prepositions. Second, when expressing a location which is merely relational, i.e. whensuris used as a synonym forà(‘to’), the only translation proposed by the native speakers of Dutch isin(‘in’). It comes as no surprise that this preposition is also the most frequent translation ofà, which is the French desemantized preposition par excellence.
Samenvatting Wij onderzochten de effecten van verondersteld en werkelijk begrip van gemakkelijke en moeilijke Engelse slagzinnen in een gestandaardiseerde reclamecampagne. De moeilijkheidsgraad blijkt enkel bepalend voor de herinnering van de merknaam en de voorkeurstaal van de slagzin. Beide vormen van begrip hangen samen met de herinnering van de merknaam en de slagzin en met de voorkeurstaal. Verondersteld begrip ten slotte, heeft een nog groter effect op de attitude en de koopintentie van de consument dan werkelijk begrip.
