We study the stationary dynamics of an active interacting Brownian particle system. We measure the violations of the fluctuation dissipation theorem, and the corresponding effective temperature, in a locally resolved way. Quite naturally, in the homogeneous phases the diffusive properties and effective temperature are also homogeneous. Instead, in the inhomogeneous phases (close to equilibrium and within the MIPS sector) the particles can be separated in two groups with different diffusion properties and effective temperatures. Notably, at fixed activity strength the effective temperatures in the two phases remain distinct and approximately constant within the MIPS region, with values corresponding to the ones of the whole system at the boundaries of this sector of the phase diagram. We complement the study of the globally averaged properties with the theoretical and numerical characterization of the fluctuation distributions of the single particle diffusion, linear response, and effective temperature in the homogeneous and inhomogeneous phases. We also distinguish the behavior of the (time-delayed) effective temperature from the (instantaneous) kinetic temperature, showing that the former is independent on the friction coefficient.

With the help of molecular dynamics simulations we study an ensemble of active dumbbells in purely repulsive interaction. We derive the phase diagram in the density-activity plane and we characterise the various phases with liquid, hexatic and solid character. In this paper, we perform a numerical analysis of the effective temperature extracted from the deviations from the fluctuation dissipation theorem in a system of active Brownian spherical particles with excluded volume interactions. We show that, in the low density homogeneous phase at fixed Péclet number, the effective temperature decreases when the density of the system is increased. We compare this trend to the one found in the literature with simulations of other active models.

We study the large deviations of the power injected by the active force for an active Ornstein–Uhlenbeck particle (AOUP), free or in a confining potential. For the free-particle case, we compute the rate function analytically in d-dimensions from a saddle-point expansion, and numerically in two dimensions by (a) direct sampling of the active work in numerical solutions of the AOUP equations and (b) Legendre–Fenchel transform of the scaled cumulant generating function obtained via a cloning algorithm. The rate function presents asymptotically linear branches on both sides and it is independent of the system’s dimensionality, apart from a multiplicative factor. For the confining potential case, we focus on two-dimensional systems and obtain the rate function numerically using both methods (a) and (b). We find a different scenario for harmonic and anharmonic potentials: in the former case, the phenomenology of fluctuations is analogous to that of a free particle, but the rate function might be non-analytic; in the latter case the rate functions are analytic, but fluctuations are realised by entirely different means, which rely strongly on the particle-potential interaction. Finally, we check the validity of a fluctuation relation for the active work distribution. In the free-particle case, the relation is satisfied with a slope proportional to the bath temperature. The same slope is found for the harmonic potential, regardless of activity, and for an anharmonic potential with low activity. In the anharmonic case with high activity, instead, we find a different slope which is equal to an effective temperature obtained from the fluctuation–dissipation theorem.

We review the advancement of the research toward the design and implementation of quantum plenoptic cameras, radically novel 3D imaging devices that exploit both momentumposition entanglement and photon-number correlations to provide the typical refocusing and ultra-fast, scanning-free, 3D imaging capability of plenoptic devices, along with dramatically enhanced performances, unattainable in standard plenoptic cameras: diffraction-limited resolution, large depth of focus, and ultra-low noise. To further increase the volumetric resolution beyond the Rayleigh diffraction limit, and achieve the quantum limit, we are also developing dedicated protocols based on quantum Fisher information. However, for the quantum advantages of the proposed devices to be effective and appealing to end-users, two main challenges need to be tackled. First, due to the large number of frames required for correlation measurements to provide an acceptable SNR, quantum plenoptic imaging would require, if implemented with commercially available high-resolution cameras, acquisition times ranging from tens of seconds to a few minutes. Second, the elaboration of this large amount of data, in order to retrieve 3D images or refocusing 2D images, requires highperformance and time-consuming computation. To address these challenges, we are developing high-resolution SPAD arrays and high-performance low-level programming of ultra-fast electronics, combined with compressive sensing and quantum tomography algorithms, with the aim to reduce both the acquisition and the elaboration time by two orders of magnitude. Routes toward exploitation of the QPI devices will also be discussed.
