Scholars have approached the analysis of the host community from a supply perspective rather than a demand one. This paper focuses on the study of residents when acting as tourists in their own region. In this sense, the present work aims to fill the gap existing in the literature about residents' tourist behaviour, analysing the influence of the image of their province on their evaluation of their travel experience and their future behaviour intentions. To accomplish this objective, a path analysis is carried out to test jointly the set of relationships among image, perceived quality, satisfaction, intention to return and willingness to recommend.
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study the drivers of service provider switching intention other than satisfaction and, additionally, analyse the moderating role of the type of service (utilitarian vs hedonic). Specifically, the authors study the effects of alternative attractiveness, post-purchase regret, anticipated regret and past switching behaviour.
Design/methodology/approach
A representative survey with 800 consumers of mobile phone services (utilitarian) and holiday destinations (hedonic) was carried out.
Findings
Satisfaction is not a significant antecedent of switching intention in the hedonic service and its effect is marginal in the utilitarian service. In the utilitarian service, the main predictor of switching intention is post-purchase regret, whereas in the hedonic service, the main determinants of switching intention are past switching behaviour and anticipated regret.
Originality/value
The main contribution of this study is the analysis of the determinants of provider switching behaviour that may explain abandonment by satisfied customers, to see if their influence is greater or smaller than that of satisfaction itself, which has been the most analysed variable. Furthermore, there are expected to be differences between utilitarian and hedonic services, an aspect which is also studied in this work.
Resumen: Con los objetivos de (1) determinar los temas más recurrentes en la literatura de marketing turístico y su ámbito de aplicación, intentando identificar futuras líneas de investigación, y (2) analizar la orientación metodológica de los mismos, se realizó una investigación centrada en el análisis de contenido de 269 artículos de marketing turístico publicados en las principales revistas internacionales especializadas en el periodo 2004-2006. Los resultados obtenidos por tres jueces independientes destacan el papel central del comportamiento del turista, siendo las estrategias de marketing el segundo tema más estudiado. En cuanto al subsector, casi la mitad de los trabajos de marketing turístico se aplican a destinos, siendo también relevante el análisis de los tipos de turismo.
