Als einer der berühmtesten Maler des 20. Jahrhunderts geliebt, gehasst und ausgiebig therapiert, fasziniert Salvador Dalí bis heute und lockt Massen in die Museen. Sich selbst als Gesamtkunstwerk in Szene zu setzen und gleichsam zur Pop-Ikone aufzusteigen, gilt heute als Erfolgskonzept. Dalí gehört diesbezüglich zu den Pionieren und verstand es seit den 1920er Jahren vor allem durch die Interaktion zwischen seinen Schriften, Bildern, Filmideen, Fotomontagen, Modeentwürfen und Performances, mit den Medien und den Betrachtern zu spielen. Die Beiträge des Bandes bieten einen Überblick dieser intermedialen Bezüge.
Dieser Band bezieht sich auf die Phase der Filmgeschichte von der Nouvelle Vague (um 1960) bis zum Kino der Gegenwart. Seine Ausgangsüberlegung lautet, dass sich der Surrealismus nicht auf die Zeit der Avantgarden der 1920er und 30er Jahre einschränken lässt, sondern bis heute filmische und intermediale Spielformen hervorbringt. Im Zuge der Globalisierung und Internationalisierung der Kinoindustrie findet man surrealistische Filme bzw. Elemente im Weltkino von Hollywood bis Hongkong, vom Mainstream- bis zum Independentkino. Die Beiträger_innen konzentrieren sich auf Regisseure, die aktuelle Erscheinungsformen einer Ästhetik des Surrealen reflektieren - u.a. Almodóvar, Fellini, Godard, Greenaway, Herzog, Kubrick, Lynch, Welles. Dabei werden exemplarische Filme analysiert, um Aspekte surrealistischer Filmkunst im Œuvre der jeweiligen Filmemacher zur Diskussion zu stellen. Das Interesse liegt besonders in den Aktualisierungen des Surrealismus im (post-)modernen Film, in surrealen Spiel- und Assoziationsformen einer karnevalesken Polyphonie.
