Tlic Illinois S t u d y of School 11-urse Practice" originated as a result of a number of serious problems confronting the school nurses in Illinois. Part of the difficulty seemed to stem from divergent thinking related to school nurse function. Academic preparation of school nurses and opinions of schuol administrators and teachers added to the complexity. The need for clarification of these issues demanded the attention of the Illinois Association of School Nurses. In January 1963, the executive liostrcl agreed that the Association had a responsibility to assist its members by at least investigating the situation. It was voted that the Illinois Association of school nurses conduct a btudy to determine the nature and extent of the problem and factors related to or precipitating problem conditions. Only as this information became available would it be pobsilole t o assess needs realistically.
