Esta tese indaga os sentidos que os Karitiana -população de língua Tupi-Arikém da Amazônia Meridional -atribuem ao termo "especial" (osikirip) para caracterizarem alguns de seus parentes. Essa condição os estimula a procurar instituições não indígenas para que usufruam de tratamento médico e benefícios sociais específicos. Ao mesmo tempo que aproximam os "especiais" a espíritos e ogros, os Karitiana jamais questionam seus vínculos de parentesco -logo, sua condição humana. Tal equação permite uma reflexão, a partir de novo ângulo, sobre questões concernentes à noção de pessoa ameríndia.
