The purpose of this study was to explore empirically whether undergraduate nursing students at a selected university in Hong Kong display a disposition towards critical thinking. The California Critical Thinking Dispositions Inventory (CCTDI) was used to measure the key theoretical aspects of the overall dispositional dimension of critical thinking. A cross-sectional descriptive design was used to examine 122 Chinese students who were completing their 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of a university baccalaureate nursing programme. In the majority of sub-scales of CCTDI, students showed a negative disposition towards critical thinking. A one-way ANOVA indicated that year 3 students scored significantly lower than their junior counterparts (P < 0. 001). Pearson product moment correlation coefficient yielded a significant positive relationship between critical thinking dispositions and term grade point average (P < 0.05). Consistent with the findings of western studies, the students scored lowest on the truth-seeking sub-scale and highest on the inquisitiveness. Discussion of the findings with regard to nursing education, curriculum and research is delineated.
Psychological well-being as an important factor in rehabilitation in chronic illness has been much neglected in the literature. Supporting nursing home staff in the care of COPD patients through community nursing visits can enhance older residents' psychological well-being. Psychological aspects of care should be emphasized and incorporated into the delivery of regular nursing home care.
This research examines job satisfaction and need for autonomy of 190 registered nurses in Hong Kong using a cross-sectional survey design. The level of job satisfaction towards six job components (autonomy, professional status, pay, interaction, task requirements and organizational policies) was measured using the Index of Work Satisfaction. Results showed that the sample was dissatisfied more than satisfied, they valued the job components of autonomy, professional status and pay more than interaction, task requirements and organizational policies. In addition, comparisons were made between nurses working in different hospitals and also different nursing units within a hospital. The level of need for autonomy was assessed using the autonomy subscale of the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule. Results showed that the level of need for autonomy of this group of nurses was below the mid-score of the sub-scale and there was no significant relationship between their satisfaction with job autonomy and their individual need for autonomy.
The results of this study showed that anxiety and depression are not only associated with pain intensity but that they also, partly, predict pain intensity in patients with low back pain who are newly admitted to an acute care hospital. Relevance to clinical practice. The results of this study support the assessment of and intervention in anxiety and depression symptoms in the provision of pain-relief nursing treatment in patients with low back pain who are admitted to acute care hospitals.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
