Zinc (Zn) is a fundamental micronutrient for plants’ metabolism, but in high concentrations, it is toxic. In this study, we investigated the physiological response of white mustard (Sinapis alba L. cv. Belgia) plants to the Zn excess concentrations (50, 100, and 150 mg kg−1) in the substrate. The results showed that sand Zn concentration of 50 mg kg−1 did not affect the physiological parameters of plants, despite to the high Zn accumulation in shoots. The growth, biomass accumulation, photosynthesis rate, and pigment amount were inhibited at Zn concentrations of 100 and 150 mg kg−1 in substrate. A slight increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) was also observed at zinc concentrations (100 and 150 mg kg−1) without changes in membrane permeability, which is partly connectedtoan increase in the proline content. The results suggested that white mustard tolerates Zn excess impact. S. alba is able to grow on Zn-contaminated substrates along with significant Zn accumulation in shoots, which supports its high potential for phytoremediation of Zn-polluted agricultural soils. It is also possible to propose the following recycling of white mustard plants for Zn fortification feedstuff.
EFFECT OF LOW AND HIGH HARDENING AND DAMAGING TEMPERATURES ON THE TRANSCRIPTION LEVEL OF BI-1 GENE IN WHEATThe dynamics of transcripts of anti-apoptotic BI-1 gene in wheat plants (Triticium aestivum L.) of cv. Moscovskaya 39 subjected to low (4 and -2 °С) and high (37 and 43 °С) hardening and damaging temperatures was studied. It was shown that cold tolerance in plants was raised under the impact of low hardening temperature (4 °C), accompanied in the initial stage by the accumulation of transcripts of BI-1 gene. In contrast, cold tolerance and BI-1 mRNA level decreased under the impact of low damaging temperature
Under exposure of wheat plants to high temperatures (33, 37, and 43°C), the level of transcripts of the genes encoding proapoptotic proteins-TaMCAII (encodes type II metacaspase) and TaBAX (functional homologue of the CDF1 gene of Arabidopsis thaliana)-in leaf cells increased. This process at temperatures of 37 and 43°C passed ahead of (in the case of TaBAX mRNA) or was accompanied by (in the case of TaMCAII mRNA) the emergence of signs of nucleosomal DNA degradation in leaves. The accumulation of malondialdehyde in the leaves of seedlings exposed to temperatures of 37 and 43°C coincided in time with a change in the TaMCAII gene expression and the emergence of signs of programmed cell death.
