En este artículo se presentan tres obras escultóricas guipuzcoanas (España, País Vasco), en las que la presencia de la técnica polícroma del brocado aplicado no había sido detectada hasta la fecha. Se trata de los retablos del Oratorio de Loiola (1498-1512) y San Martin de Azpeitia (1521) y la talla de la Virgen con el Niño de Zumaia (ca.1500). El análisis de sus modelos de brocado ha motivado la revisión formal de esta técnica en el territorio, desvelando filiaciones complejas entre retablos ubicados en la región e incluso en poblaciones más lejanas. Igualmente se propone una sencilla ordenación estilística de los mismos, ya que su periodo de producción coincide con la transición de dos estilos artísticos: el tardogótico y el primer renacimiento.
La reciente restauración del retablo de los Santos de la Antigua Colegiata de Covarrubias ha permitido ahondar en el conocimiento de las características técnicas de una obra significativa que había permanecido relativamente desconocida hasta la actualidad. Los diversos estudios y pruebas científicas realizadas han contribuido a su ubicación dentro del corpus de retablos brabanzones del siglo XV. A pesar de sus importantes pérdidas, la calidad de su talla y la riqueza de sus brocados aplicados excepcionalmente conservados le convierten en un referente en su campo. Su policromía, sobria y rica al mismo tiempo, adquiere su propia personalidad dentro de la tradición de los retablos de la época, con los que se emparenta tanto por su colorido como por los materiales y procedimientos técnicos empleados.
El valor cultural de un objeto es un concepto complejo y amplio, fruto de una multiplicidad de factores y significados. Su evaluación, indispensable para la buena gestión de su protección y conservación, se convierte en tarea difícil y delicada al enlazarse este conjunto de variables. El artículo presenta un formulario de valoración diseñado a partir de la identificación de una serie de valores y subvalores propios del bien cultural y de su baremación verbal y numérica. Esta herramienta ha sido utilizada en un proyecto de revisión de inventario de bienes muebles religiosos de una pequeña población guipuzcoana, con el fin de jerarquizar dichos bienes con cierto grado de objetividad y facilitar de esta manera un planteamiento posterior de niveles de protección.
