Anthropometry and neuromuscular fitness have been shown to relate with taekwondo (TKD) performance; however, little information is available on the variation of these fitness components by sex and age in athletes practicing this sport. The aim of the present study was to examine the anthropometry and neuromuscular fitness of TKD athletes by sex and age. A total of 393 athletes (7–48 years old), separated into six age groups (7–9, 10–11, 12–13, 14–17, 18–32, and 33+), were examined for anthropometry and performed a series of neuromuscular fitness tests (flexibility, agility, muscle power, and isometric strength). An age × sex interaction on body mass, body height, and body fat percentage (BF, p≤0.003, η2≥0.045), but not on body mass index (p=0.172, η2=0.020), was shown, where a larger increase in body mass and body height from 12–13 to 14–17 groups was observed in males than in females, and the sex difference in BF increased from 12–13 to 14–17 age group. An age × sex interaction on sit-and-reach (SAR) test, mean power output in the Bosco test, and Abalakov jump (p≤0.038, η2≥0.031) was observed with larger differences between 12–13 and 18–32 groups in males than in females. In SAR, it was remarkable that the male athletes achieved similar scores as female athletes in the 18–32 group. An age × sex group interaction on measures of isometric muscle strength (right and left handgrip, trunk, and legs) was also shown (p≤0.002, η2≥0.068), where larger differences in male than female athletes were observed between the 12–13 and 14–17 groups. From a practical perspective, coaches can use these findings as reference for the evaluation of their athletes. Because the anthropometric characteristics and neuromuscular fitness varied by sex (i.e., highest scores in males, except flexibility) and age (i.e., highest scores in the 18–32 age group) with unique sport-specific patterns in TKD athletes, these findings would be important for the development of specific training programs.

Aim: The kinetic chain of the punch of boxers is characterized by the contribution of the shoulder; however, the isokinetic muscle strength of shoulder’s rotators muscles has not been well studied so far, especially with regards to performance. Therefore, the aim of the present study was (a) to profile the isokinetic muscle strength of rotators of the glenohumeral joint, bilateral (BL), unilateral (UL) and functional ratios in amateur boxers, and (b) to examine the variation of these muscle strength characteristics by performance level.Methods: Forty male amateur Greek boxers from three division levels (elite, n = 22; second division, n = 11; and third division, n = 7), and 10 non-athletes (control group) were tested, using the isokinetic dynamometer Kin-ComTM in the scapular seated position under standard conditions. We examined (i) peak torque (PT) of internal (IR) and external (ER) rotators during concentric (CON) and eccentric (ECC) contractions at low (60°/s), medium (120°/s), and high speed (180°/s), (ii) BL, (iii) UL, and (iv) functional ratios of dominant (D) and non-dominant (ND) limbs.Results: Boxers were stronger than control group in IR and ER at all speeds, and D outscored ND limb (p < 0.05). Elite boxers were stronger than group B and C (p < 0.05); however, when peak torque was expressed in relative to body mass values, these differences were attenuated. The BL ratios for the men athletes were under 10% at 60 and 180°/s, the UL ratios were lower at 60 and higher at 180°/s and significant lower in the dominant limb at all speeds. The functional ratios of IR ECC / ER CON were higher between the control group at all speeds and the ER ECC/IR CON ratios were between 60 and 180°/s, and the two limbs with higher values at 180°/s.Conclusion: Boxers had the strongest dominant limb and their BL ratios were normal at all speeds except of 120°/s ECC. The UL ratios of ECC at 120 and 180°/s of ND were normal, and at the other speeds abnormal due to high IR. In addition, the functional ratios may be related to the kinetic chain of the punch, which in turn correlates with the contribution of ER of both limbs.

The aim of this study was to examine changes in physical attributes, physiological characteristics and responses that occurred in a simulated combat during a six-week preparatory period in young taekwondo athletes. Seven athletes (age 12.17 ± 1.11 years) were examined before (pre-intervention) and after (post-intervention) a preparatory period for physical fitness and physiological responses to a 2×90 s simulated bout with a 30 s rest period. The heart rate (HR) was monitored during the simulated combat, and handgrip muscle strength (HMS) along with the countermovement jump (CMJ) were recorded before and after the combat. When compared with pre-intervention values, in post-intervention we observed a decrease in body mass, body fat percentage, and the HR at rest and during recovery after a 3 min step test, and an increase in maximal velocity of the cycle ergometer force-velocity test, the CMJ and mean power during the 30 s continuous jumping test (p<0.05). Furthermore, HR responses to a simulated combat were lower in the post-intervention session (p<0.05). CMJ values increased after the bout in both pre and post-intervention, with higher absolute values in the latter case (p<0.05), whereas there was no difference in HMS. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the acute physiological responses to a simulated taekwondo combat vary during a season, which might be explained by changes in physical fitness.

BackgroundThe repeated sprint ability (RSA) has been studied with protocols using distances longer than 20 m per sprint, whereas basketball players cover on average less than 20-meter distance per sprint during match.ObjectivesThe aim of the present study was to examine the physiological impact of 10 × 15 m RSA test in straight-line (RSASL) or with change of direction (RSACOD), i.e. 10 × (7.5 + 7.5 m)) in young national level basketball players.Patients and MethodsYoung basketball players (n = 11, age 17.1 (1.0) years, body mass 76 (6) kg, height 184 (4) cm, body mass index 22.6 (1.8) kgm-2, sport experience 6.9 (2.7) years, mean (standard deviation)) and a control group consisting of high-school athletes (n = 7, 16.1 (0.7) years, 67 (6) kg, 177 (6) cm, 21.5 (1.0) kgm-2, 7.7 (1.6) years, respectively) performed RSASL and RSACOD on a counter-balanced order. Sprints started every 30 seconds (active recovery) and there was 30 minutes break between RSA protocols; time variables were total time (TT), best time (BT) and fatigue index (FI). Countermovement jump (CMJ) was tested before and after each RSA protocol. Heart rate (HR) was continuously monitored during testing procedures.ResultsCompared with RSASL, TT and BT were worst in RSACOD (38.13 vs. 27.52 s and 3.67 vs. 2.66 s, P < 0.001, respectively), whereas FI did not differ (3.8 vs. 3.5%, P = 0.388). A 2 × 2 repeated measures ANOVA showed main effect of RSA on CMJ (pre-test vs. post-test, increase + 1.8 cm, P = 0.020, η2 = 0.28); there was neither main effect of RSA protocols (RSASL vs. RSACOD +0.7 cm, P = 0.251, η2 = 0.08) nor an interaction between pre-post measurements and RSA protocols (P = 0.578, η2 = 0.02). Compared with RSASL, RSACOD induced higher mean and peak HR responses (175 vs 172 bpm, P < 0.001, and 185 vs 182 bpm, P = 0.002, respectively). No statistical difference was observed between basketball players and control group neither for TT (27.98 vs. 26.80 seconds, + 4.4%, P = 0.149) and BT (2.71 vs. 2.59 seconds, + 4.5%, P = 0.157) in RSASL nor for TT (38.55 vs. 37.47 seconds, + 2.9%, P = 0.169) and BT (3.70 vs. 3.63 seconds, 1.8%, P = 0.414) in RSACOD.ConclusionsIn conclusion, RSASL and RSACOD differed for time variables (TT and BT) and HR responses. Despite being non-significant, the trend that adding COD reduced the percentage differences in TT and BT between the two groups highlighted the role of sport specialization.

Study aim: To investigate the role of age, height, and weight categories on the performance of top nations and boxing medalists in Olympic Games (OG) (1904–2018) and World Championships (WG) (1974–2019). Material and methods: Data were collected from 1,806 athletes using the website of International Boxing Association (AIBA), International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Wikipedia. Results: The average age of medalists was ~24yrs with an increase of age (medium effect) across this 115 years period. Height was 1.76m and the super heavy category had significantly higher values by age and height compared to the other weight categories. The top medalists were three men with triple gold medals on OG and 13 over three on WC. Performance was associated with nationality (p < 0.01, medium effect), where a dominance of Cubans (211 medals) was observed. Conclusion: These findings highlighted the importance of the long-term development and specialization of talent athletes for peak performance in elite competitions.

Το άθλημα της πυγμαχίας έχει χαρακτηριστεί από μια ομάδα οχτώ ειδικών ως το πιο δύσκολο άθλημα με βάση δέκα αθλητικές δεξιότητες. Παρουσιάζει μεγάλη ανάπτυξη παγκοσμίως καθώς αριθμεί 201 Ομοσπονδίες στο σύνολο των 205 συμμετεχόντων χωρών σε Ολυμπιακούς αγώνες. Σήμερα, η πυγμαχία θεωρείται θεαματικό άθλημα και κάθε ερασιτεχνικός αγώνας έχει διάρκεια τρείς γύρους των τριών λεπτών με ένα λεπτό διάλειμμα ανάμεσά τους, όπου οι δύο αθλητές αγωνίζονται στην ίδια κατηγορία βάρους. Στόχος των αθλητών είναι να επιτύχουν δυνατά και ισχυρά χτυπήματα για να κερδίσουν περισσότερα σημεία και ταυτόχρονα προσπαθούν να αποκρούουν τις γροθιές του αντιπάλου. Έτσι, κατά τη διεξαγωγή του αγώνα σημαντικό ρόλο εκτός των άλλων μυών του σώματος, παίζουν και οι έσω/έξω στροφείς του ώμου, οι οποίοι συστέλλονται τόσο μειομετρικά, όσο και πλειομετρικά στις αρχικές και τελικές φάσεις των χτυπημάτων. Πρέπει να υπάρχει μυοδυναμική συμμετρία και ισορροπία ώστε να αποφεύγονται τραυματισμοί, καθώς συμβάλλουν στην επικράτηση έναντι του αντιπάλου κατά την διάρκεια ενός αγώνα. Ενώ στα άλλα μαχητικά αθλήματα όπως το καράτε, το ταεκβοντό και το τζούντο, έχει διερευνηθεί η ροπή των στροφέων μυών του ώμου σε διάφορες ταχύτητες, στην ερασιτεχνική πυγμαχία οι έρευνες είναι ελάχιστες. Έτσι, ο σκοπός της παρούσας διατριβής ήταν να αξιολογήσει τη μέγιστη μειομετρική και πλειομετρική ροπή των έσω και έξω στροφέων του ώμου ερασιτεχνών αθλητών πυγμαχίας στις γωνιακές ταχύτητες των 60, 120, 180ο/sec και να τη συγκρίνει με επιλεγμένες κατηγορικές μεταβλητές. Στη μελέτη πήραν μέρος εθελοντικά 40 ερασιτέχνες αθλητές της πυγμαχίας, 10 έφηβοι αθλητές πυγμαχίας, και 10 μη αθλητές. Οι μετρήσεις πραγματοποιήθηκαν στο ισοκινητικό δυναμόμετρο Kin-Com TM (Chattecx, Chattanooga, TN). Μετά την ανάλυση των μετρήσεων με περιγραφική στατιστική, t-test κατά ζεύγη, t-test δύο κατευθύνσεων και ανάλυση διακύμανσης κατά μία κατεύθυνση παρατηρήθηκαν οι εξής στατιστικά σημαντικές διαφορές: 1. Μεταξύ της μέγιστης μειομετρικής και πλειομετρικής ροπής των έσω και έξω στροφέων του ώμου των ερασιτεχνών αντρών αθλητών και των δυο ομάδων, καθώς και μεταξύ του κυρίαρχου και μη άκρου των ερασιτεχνών αντρών, στις γωνιακές ταχύτητες των 60, 120 και 180ο/sec. 2. Μεταξύ της μέγιστης μειομετρικής και πλειομετρικής ροπής των έσω και έξω στροφέων, με τα έτη και τη συχνότητα προπόνησης, την αγωνιστική κατηγορία και τον αριθμό νικών στους αγώνες, των ερασιτεχνών αντρών αθλητών στις 60ο, 120ο και 180ο/sec. 3. Μεταξύ των τυπικών αναλογιών της μυϊκής ισορροπίας των έξω/έσω στροφέων τόσο μειομετρικά όσο και πλειομετρικά των αντρών αθλητών και της ομάδας ελέγχου, με μικρότερες τιμές τόσο στους αθλητές, όσο και μεταξύ του κυρίαρχου και μη ώμου των αντρών αθλητών, στις 60ο, 120ο και 180ο/sec. 4. Μεταξύ των λειτουργικών αναλογιών της έξω πλειομετρικής προς έσω μειομετρικής ροπής και της έσω πλειομετρικής προς την έξω μειομετρική, με των αντρών αθλητών και της ομάδας ελέγχου με μεγαλύτερες τιμές στους αθλητές στις 60ο, 120ο και 180ο/sec στην πρώτη αναλογία και στις 180ο/sec στην δεύτερη, καθώς και μεταξύ του κυρίαρχου και μη ώμου των αντρών αθλητών στις 60ο, 120ο και 180ο/sec. Η αμφίπλευρη μυϊκή αναλογία της μειομετρικής και πλειομετρικής μέγιστης ροπής στους έσω και έξω στροφείς, είναι φυσιολογικές στις 60ο και 180ο/sec. Δεν παρατηρήθηκαν στατιστικά σημαντικές διαφορές μεταξύ της μέγιστης μειομετρικής και πλειομετρικής ροπής των έσω και έξω στροφέων στις 60ο, 120ο και 180ο/sec, και της ηλικίας, του αναστήματος, του σωματικού βάρους, του αριθμού των χαμένων αγώνων (ήττες), του αριθμού των τραυματισμών αυτών και του κυρίαρχου ή μη κάτω άκρου. Η γωνία επίτευξης της μέγιστης ροπής της έσω στροφής είναι περίπου στις 65-70o μοίρες και της έξω στις 10-15o και συμφωνεί με το κινητικό προφίλ της γροθιάς. Τα αποτελέσματα της παρούσης διατριβής έδειξαν ότι η μέγιστη πλειομετρική και μειομετρική ροπή των έσω και έξω στροφέων μυών του ώμου στις 60ο, 120ο και 180ο/sec, των ερασιτεχνών πυγμάχων επηρεάζεται από τα έτη και την συχνότητα προπόνησης, την αγωνιστική κατηγορία και τον αριθμό νικών. Οι αθλητές παρουσιάζουν μυοδυναμική συμμετρία μειομετρικά και πλειομετρικά στους έσω και έξω στροφείς. Οι συμβατικές και οι λειτουργικές μυϊκές αναλογίες είναι στατιστικά σημαντικές μεταξύ κυρίαρχου και μη ώμου. Περαιτέρω έρευνες σε μεγαλύτερες γωνιακές ταχύτητες απαιτούνται για να επιβεβαιώσουν τη χρησιμότητα των αποτελεσμάτων της παρούσας διατριβής.
