<p>The management of designs for a large-scale and technically demanding project such as the Egnatia Motorway constructed in Greece is not an easy task. Egnatia Odos A.E. was proactive in making strategic decisions and developing appropriate procedures with the aim to overcome any difficulties in this field and ensure high-quality designs within the time and cost restrictions set by the project. This paper presents the company choices and evaluates their effectiveness.</p>
<p>Metosvitikos Bridge is one of the land mark structures of the Egnatia Motorway project in northern Greece. A pier-less suspension bridge scheme was originally selected for this structure through an international design competition. However, due to geotechnical uncertainties, this scheme was replaced by a balanced cantilever bridge with the main span of 235m which is considered to be the longest span for this of construction in the Balkans. This paper outlines the suspension bridge scheme, and describes the design and construction of the balanced cantilever bridge.</p>
