Purpose -This paper's primary purpose is to emphasize the importance of entrepreneur training regarding creativity and innovation. Their significance and the importance of the latter regarding the development of business and training needs are the research questions of a survey conducted in northern Greece. Design/methodology/approach -The survey, of 116 entrepreneurs, owners of small medium and very small enterprises, investigates awareness, attitudes and perceptions regarding creativity and innovation, for facilitating the design and development of training interventions. Data were collected using modified and extended questionnaires of an analogous tool created for the needs of the TRACTORS project. The questionnaires included both open-ended and closed questions. Descriptive statistics were generated by the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. Findings -Findings suggest that entrepreneurs/owners and/or managers of micro and small medium enterprises in northern Greece are largely aware of the significance of creativity and innovation, believing that these are positively related to each other and interact in the development of their business. Training intervention is deemed as of great importance, and obstacles concerning financial resources, experience, time, infrastructure and not risk averse, were underlined. Research limitations/implications -Creativity and innovation training interventions for entrepreneurs in terms of process, content, method, duration, trainers etc., is in a fledgling stage and requires further research to determine the "right training intervention mix" serving the needs of the non homogeneous entrepreneurial category. Originality/value -Although entrepreneurship creativity and innovation are viewed as the "creation of the future", little has been done to train entrepreneurs to participate creatively in the innovation economy. The present paper traces these needs.

Integrated management of pipe networks should include methods for monitoring, repairing and replacing deteriorating components (usually pipes), but also methods and everyday operating practices towards a proactive risk assessment approach in order to give a solid answer to the unavoidable "repair or replace" dilemma. The present paper attempts to check whether the Discriminant Analysis and Classification (DAC) method can be used to achieve the above mentioned goals and predict the future behaviour of network pipes. Three pipe networks carrying different types of fluids (oil; gas; and water) are used as case studies. For each case study network, the DAC method is used to classify the pipes into two groups (failures/successes), based on simple variables (pipe/network characteristics) and dimensionless joint ones. Several scenarios are being analysed for each case. The results for the two cases of oil and gas networks are very satisfying. The implementation of the DAC method to water pipe networks needs to overcome serious problems related to the quality, reliability and compatibility of the data records provided by the Water Utilities. In this paper, these shortcomings are faced combining field data with theoretical one. Also the distinction between what "failure" and "success" actually mean in a water pipe network has to be determined. The present study uses the total water volume being lost as a definition criterion.

This paper attempts to identify the suitability of centrally designed innovation-related regional actions, examining the case of regions that started innovative activities from a low development level. Using the case of two Greek regions, the paper analyses the legacy left to the regional systems by a series of regional innovation programmes implemented during the 1990s and 2000s, whose main priorities were designed centrally without any regional consultation. The findings suggest that these programmes often provide the means for generating the first steps towards the creation of a Regional Innovation System; however often they create a dependency on publicly funded programmes.

Several theories have been developed over a large number of years on the effort of localisation and exploitation of research results that take place in research laboratories and which can lead to the production of innovative products. This process is being facilitated by spin-off companies. The purpose of this paper is to shed light on this process of developing a spin-off company. To this goal a framework has been developed, namely “the Spin-off Chain”, which will be used as a guide and will provide to future entrepreneurs a roadmap exploiting the knowledge produced in academic and research laboratories
