We prepared bulk samples of supercooled liquid water under pressure by isochoric heating of high-density amorphous ice to temperatures of 205 ± 10 kelvin, using an infrared femtosecond laser. Because the sample density is preserved during the ultrafast heating, we could estimate an initial internal pressure of 2.5 to 3.5 kilobar in the high-density liquid phase. After heating, the sample expanded rapidly, and we captured the resulting decompression process with femtosecond x-ray laser pulses at different pump-probe delay times. A discontinuous structural change occurred in which low-density liquid domains appeared and grew on time scales between 20 nanoseconds to 3 microseconds, whereas crystallization occurs on time scales of 3 to 50 microseconds. The dynamics of the two processes being separated by more than one order of magnitude provides support for a liquid-liquid transition in bulk supercooled water.

Fundamental studies of chemical reactions often draw molecular dynamics along a reaction coordinate in a calculated or suggested potential energy surface (PES) 1-5 . But fully mapping such dynamics experimentally, by following all nuclear motions in a timeresolved manner, that is the motions of wavepackets, is challenging and has not even been realized for the simple stereotypical bimolecular reaction 6-8 of A-B + C → A + B-C. Here we report such tracking of vibrational wavepacket trajectories during photo-induced bond formation in the gold trimer complex [Au(CN)2 -]3 in an aqueous solution, using femtosecond x-ray solution scattering (liquidography 9-12 ) at x-ray free electron lasers 13,14 . We find that the complex forms from an assembly of three monomers A, B and C clustered together through non-covalent interactions 15,16 and with the distance between A and B shorter than between B and C. Tracking of the wavepacket in three-dimensional nuclear coordinates (RAB, RBC, and RAC) reveals that within the first 60 fs after photoexcitation, a covalent bond forms between A and B to give A-B + C. The second covalent bond, between B and C, subsequently forms within 360 fs to give a linear and covalently-bonded trimer complex A-B-C. The trimer exhibits harmonic vibrations that we are also able to map, and unambiguously assign to specific normal modes using only the experimental data. More intense x-rays can in principle visualize the motion of not only highly-scattering atoms such as gold but also of lighter atoms such as carbon and nitrogen, which will open the door for the direct tracking of the atomic motions involved in many chemical reactions.The [Au(CN)2 -]3 complex has served as a valuable model system for studying photoinitiated processes in solution. Irradiation with ultraviolet light excites it from the ground state (S0) to the singlet state (S1), which within 20 fs undergoes intersystem crossing to reach a triplet excited state (T1') 18 . A further transition from T1' to another triplet excited state (T1) then occurs with a time constant of 1~2 ps, completing formation of covalent bonds and transformation of the complex from a bent to a linear structure 9,17,18 (see the Supplementary Information (SI) for details of the notations of electronic states).Formation of the bonds could involve any of the three possible candidate trajectories sketched in Fig. 1b. Photochromic ring closure reaction dynamics of 1,2-bis(2-methylbenzo[b]thiophen-3-yl)hexafluoro cyclopentene and its derivatives in solution has been studied by femtosecond time-resolved fluorescence. Time-resolved spontaneous fluorescence of the open isomer reveals a fast component of around 1 ps and a slow component on the order of 100 ps. Fluorescence time profiles, reaction quantum yields, and relative populations of the parallel (C(s) symmetry) and antiparallel (C(2) symmetry) conformations indicate that both time components are attributable mostly to the C(2) conformer that undergoes the ring closure reaction. The fast component is assigned to the direct ring closure reaction, and the slow component is assigned to the reaction through conformation change. Time constants of the slow component for the derivatives are inversely proportional to the reaction quantum yields, suggesting that the rate of the conformational dynamics is comparable to the rate of other population relaxation processes. The relative amplitude and exact time constant of the fast component depend on the detection wavelength displaying a higher relative amplitude with shorter time constant at longer wavelengths. The results allow us to propose a conformational inhomogeneity model, in which a broad distribution of conformations of the open isomers in the ground state is projected into two minima in the excited electronic potential surface to lead to the slow and the fast reaction pathways.

Polar solvation dynamics of coumarin 153 in acetonitrile, methanol, and butanol are investigated by dynamic Stokes shift function, S(t). In small protic solvents, it is known that an initial ultrafast component below 50 fs constitutes more than half of the total solvation process. We use fluorescence up-conversion technique via two-photon absorption process, which can provide 40 fs time resolution for the whole emission wavelength range. Moreover, time-resolved fluorescence spectra are recorded directly without the spectral reconstruction. We observe a temporal oscillation in frequency of whole emission spectrum in the solvation curve. In the obtained S(t), initial solvation time scale is 120 fs, invariant to solvents used in this experiment, although its amplitude varies in different solvents.

For concurrent emission of multiple fluorophores from a single emitting layer with a highly efficient energy transfer from antenna molecules to emitting molecules by fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), a paradoxical requirement in an emitting layer is necessary, that is, close placement of an emitting fluorophore and a harvesting molecule, and isolation of emitting fluorophores. Here we demonstrate how to overcome this paradox by full utilization of a micellar nanostructure consisting of a core and a corona, that is, the core is used as a place for FRET between light‐collecting donors and light‐emitting fluorophores, and the corona is used as a barrier for FRET between light‐emitting fluorophores. Enhancement of light emission from fluorophores was achieved by locating emitting fluorophores and light‐harvesting molecules at the same core of micelles. Moreover, with the same micellar nanostructure, concurrent emission of multiple fluorophores with enhanced intensity was induced by isolating them in independent micelles, the corona structure of which worked as an effective blockade for FRET.

We demonstrate a hard-X-ray self-seeded (HXRSS) free-electron laser (FEL) at Pohang Accelerator Laboratory with an unprecedented peak brightness (3.2 × 10 35 photons/(s•mm 2 •mrad 2 •0.1%BW)). The self-seeded FEL generates hard X-ray pulses with improved spectral purity; the average pulse energy was 0.85 mJ at 9.7 keV, almost as high as in SASE mode; the bandwidth (0.19 eV) is about 1/70 as wide, the peak spectral brightness is 40 times higher than in self-ampli ed spontaneous emission (SASE) mode, and the stability is excellent with > 94% of shots exceeding the average SASE intensity. Using this self-seeded XFEL, we conducted serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) experiments to map the structure of lysozyme protein; data-quality metrics such as R split , multiplicity, and signal-to-noise ratio for the SFX were substantially increased. We precisely map out the structure of lysozyme protein with substantially better statistics for the diffraction data and signi cantly sharper electron density maps compared to maps obtained using SASE mode.
