The complex dielectric permittivity of eight different amino acids in water solutions was determined in the frequency range from 0.2 to 20 GHz at room temperature, trying to span the whole range of solubility in each case. Two relaxations were observed at room temperature in this frequency range, which can be mainly assigned to the rotation of amino acids in the aqueous environment, and the reorientational motion of water molecules, respectively. Although the amino acids have a charged (zwitterionic) nature with huge dipole moments, the tendency towards dipolar alignment seems to be very weak, over the investigated concentration ranges. For these small bio-molecules, water screens solute-solute interactions and amino acids remain typically as isolated hydrated monomers. The dielectric results were used to estimate the number of water molecules restrained by each solute molecule. Finally, the comparison between the amino acid relaxation times made it possible to discuss the relationship between rotational dynamics and the structure and hydrodynamic coupling of the amino acid studied.
In this paper, the characteristics of an initial training program for secondary school physics and chemistry teachers are presented. This program is based on the resolution of professional problems, in order to develop preservice teachers’ competencies for integrating inquiry-based science education (IBSE) into their future teaching. With this goal in mind, the methodology of problem solving as an investigation was introduced, and preservice teachers had to solve a sequence of open-ended problems using this IBSE-type methodology. The article describes how they solved the practical problem “What might happen when two substances are placed in contact with each other?” with a specific focus on the roles of both the students and the professor. Moreover, the paper provides guidelines for implementing the problem, which is compatible with the curricular content of secondary education. Finally, an analysis of preservice teachers’ written reports about the problem suggests that the procedures which they found more difficult were those involved in the stages of “design of resolution strategies” and “analysis of results”.
Resolution of professional problems as a guide for initial physics and chemistry teacher trainingResearch in science education has given rise to a variety of proposals and activities for students at different school levels. However, this is not the case for the educational training of future teachers, especially for Secondary Education. With the intention of contributing to this issue, this paper presents a grounded experience for the development of the Physics and Chemistry Education subjects of the Spanish Master's in Secondary Education. As such, we incorporate their specific schedules, together with a series of useful activities for the teacher training process. Starting with the future teachers' beliefs, this proposal is based on their constructi on of Pedagogical Content Knowledge by solving contextualized professional problems. With that purpose, the design of Teaching Units is considered as a reflective tool in the process. Keywords: preservice secondary teacher education; pedagogical content knowledge; problem-based learning; teaching units.
