River is a location that is responsible for the main transport of nutrient flow from land to estuary and oceans. The nutrients that are adsorbed by the solid phase can be deposited and stored in the sediment. Sediments in estuaries and beaches have an important role in storing or removing nutrients from or to the water column. The presence of nutrients in porewater interacts with sediment and water column. In general, the nutrients that have a role as limiting factors for life in the waters are nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). The release of N and P elements is very important for the estuary and coastal environment, related to the process of regenerating nutrients into the water column. The release mechanism is determined by a diffusion process, based on the difference of concentration between the water column and the porewater. This study aims to determine the concentration of N and P in the porewater and estimate the value of flux. The sediment samples were taken from the Wiso and Serang estuary, Jepara. The components that were analyzed in the pore water are the concentration of N (nitrate, nitrite) and P (phosphate). Nitrite, nitrate and phosphate were determined by using sulphanilamide method and the molybdenum blue method, respectively. Furthermore, the flux value (F) was calculated based on the Fick's I Law which was corrected by porosity. The results show that the mean concentrations of nitrate (NO 3-), nitrite (NO 2-) and phosphate (PO 4 2-) in the sediment water of Serang Estuary are 1.96, 1.41, 3.46 μM and in the Wiso estuary are 3.4, 1.85, 8.22 μM. In general, based on the calculation of flux, the sediments in the Serang and Wiso estuaries have a positive flux. Moreover, the sediment in Jepara acts as a source and releases N and P nutrient into the water column. The Wiso estuary has a higher flux than the Serang estuary.
The existenece of nutrient is highly affected by human activities and causing the amount of chlorophyll-a which is the indicator of water fertility. Muara Wiso is a location located in the urban center of Jepara while Serang estuary is mostly impacted by agriculture activities in the upper area. This study has compared the concentration of chlrorophyll-a and its association with N and P nutrients in the two different environmental conditions in Jepara waters. Nutrient N was determined as a nitrite ion using the sulphanilamide method after it was reduced using a reduction column. P was determined as orthophosphate using ascorbic acid and chlorophyll-a method which were extracted from water sample filtrate, using 90% acetone. The results showed that the mean of N, P concentration of Wiso estuary was 1.3285 ± 0.33 mg N/l, 0.4723 ± 0.27 mg P/l and Serang estuary was 0.0172 ± 0.005 mg N/l, 0.3813 ± 0.21 mg P/l. The N/P ratio of Serang estuary has a higher value than Wiso. This condition caused the chlorophyll-a concentration at Serang estuary is twice higher than at Wiso. The abundance of chlorophyll-a concentration at Serang estuary is more affected by higher nutrient load of N.AbstrakKeberadaan nutrien sangat dipengaruhi oleh aktivitas manusia dan dapat menyebabkan tingginya nilai konsentrasi klorofil-a yang merupakan indikator kesuburan perairan.
The north Maluku Sea has a high wind speed in the southeast season caused an increase in the Ekman transport at the coastal area so affects in rising of chlorophyll-a and the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is cooling, who indicates the upwelling phenomenon. Upwelling in the North Maluku Sea is a type of coastal Upwelling where it occurs on the coast with a depth of more than 1500 m. The intensity of Upwelling is influenced by climate variability, one of which is El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). By using remote sensing is chlorophyll-a data, SST, wind obtained from satellite imagery, and the value Ekman Mass Transport (EMT) with method composite formula. This research aims to know the influence of climate variability ENSO against the phenomenon of upwelling that occurred in the North Maluku Sea in the southeast season. Effect of climate variability ENSO at the time of El Niño (La Niña), chlorophyll-a concentration has positive (negative) anomalies, negative (positive) SST anomaly and wind conditions thus causing EMT energy to increase (decrease).
