An increasing population in recent decades has led to the need for increasing the availability of food, so it is necessary to increase the production of paddy as quickly as possible. The aim of this research was to know the supply response of paddy in East Java to various price factors and non-price factors. In this research, the supply response was estimated by the paddy harvest areas in East Java using Cobb-Douglas model and Nerlove partial adjustment, and econometric analysis including stationarity test, cointegration test, and Error Correction Model (ECM). The data used in this research consisted of paddy harvest areas, grain price, corn price, irrigated land area and rainfall amount from 1991 to 2015. The speed of short-term adjustment to the longterm supply of rice was 2.79% and was corrected in the next period. In the short run, all variables did not have a high responsiveness to paddy supply, but in the long run, the irrigation area was very responsive to paddy supply in East Java with a value of elasticity of 1.79. Supply of paddy can be increased by increasing the real price of unhulled rice, the irrigated land, and harvested area of the previous period.
Indonesian batik small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are rapidly growing, but they face many challenges in developing their business. For this reason, we propose a combination of open innovation and engagement theory to overcome these challenges. We conducted interviews with 27 local government officers (external stakeholder) and 57 managers of batik SMEs (internal stakeholder). We confirmed the interview results with 20 batik experts and representatives from the Indonesian Ministry of Industry in the Focus Group Discussion. We have divided the findings of this study into two categories: Java and outside of Java, since the two areas have different characteristics. According to our findings, the biggest challenge of batik SMEs in Java is the emergence of the batik printing business. Meanwhile, batik SMEs outside of Java are having difficulty obtaining raw materials. Open innovation has been implemented by some batik SMEs in Indonesia and can improve their business performance. However, more batik SMEs do not implement open innovation due to the lack of their skills and involvement of other stakeholders. As a result, we suggest that open innovation in the Indonesian batik industry needs to be supported by the participation of various parties or that open innovation is combined with engagement theory.
Over the past few decades, agricultural land sustainability on the peri-urban areas face a threat to the agricultural land conversion, especially on the peri-urban areas of Pekalongan City. The sustainability of agricultural land is determined by the level of farmers’ perception. Therefore, this research was conducted to determine the factors that influence farmers’ perceptions toward agricultural land sustainability in peri-urban areas of Pekalongan City. The peri-urban areas of Pekalongan City were selected by purposive sampling method with a total sample of 90 farm owners and cultivators. Data were analyzed using OLS (Ordinary Least Square) regression model. The results have shown that the factors influencing farmers’ perceptions toward agricultural land sustainability in the peri-urban area of Pekalongan City were farmers’ knowledge, farmers’ land tenure and access to information. Based on the results of the study, the variables of farmers’ knowledge and land tenure had a negative impact, while the access to agricultural information had a positive impact on farmers’ perceptions. These results have the implication for farmers, that their perceptions can be improved by making advances to the quality of agricultural land in the suburbs, reducing both production and price risks and increasing the intensity of counseling or training related to agricultural activities in the suburbs of Pekalongan City.
The auction market of chili in the Kulon Progo Regency has proven to have many benefits to the farmers. The competition among traders in the auction market will elevate the price, making it more profitable to the farmers. However, there are still opportunities to improve the auction market performance. This study was intended to help determine the efficiency of the auction market of chili in the sandy coastal area and its determinant factors. The research was conducted from April to July 2018. The respondents were 13managers of all auction markets in the sandy coastal area of KulonProgo Regency. The research used the Data Envelopment Analysis to know the efficiency of the auction market and binary logistic methods for analyzing its determinant factors. The study showed that most of the auction markets were not efficient. There were only 2 efficient auction markets, namely Auction Group 5 and Gisik Pranaji. This was due to the fact that the two auction markets had complete supporting infrastructure and management training. Both of the auction markets’ managers also had a good partnership with the traders in other cities. Meanwhile, the main problem of the inefficient auction market was getting a low selling price in the harvest season. The determining factor of efficiency is the managers’ experience in farming. In fact, managers with long working experience have an impact on their creativity to develop the auction market. This is because such managers with a long experience of chili farming will understand market conditions. The experience is also beneficial for the managers in establishing partnerships with buyers. The other variable, the auction markets’ capital, did not affect probability of the auction market to increase their efficiency. To increase their efficiency, it is necessary for the auction markets’ manager to follow thevarious management trainingand formal education.
