Fifteen soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] cultivars were grown in Seoul, Suwon, and Kyongsan, Korea, in 1998, 1999, and 2000, and their isoflavone contents were assessed. After harvest, the beans were stored for 3 years at room temperature. Soybean isoflavones were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) within each crop year and after storage. Total isoflavone contents ranged from 188.4 to 685.6 mg 100 g(-1) in 1998, from 218.8 to 948.9 mg 100 g(-1) in 1999, and from 293.1 to 483.0 mg 100 g(-1) in 2000. The year x variety, and year x location x variety interactions were significantly different in 1998, the year x location, year x variety, and year x location x variety interactions were significantly different in 1999, and the year x variety interaction was significantly different in 2000 for total and individual isoflavone contents. Total isoflavone contents of soybeans stored for 1 year were only slightly higher than those of soybeans stored for 2 or 3 years. However, the concentrations of individual isoflavones, especially 6' '-O-malonyldaidzin and 6' '-O-malonylgenistin, decreased markedly in soybeans stored for 2 or 3 years. These data suggest that it may be feasible to improve soybean cultivars with higher antioxidative substances.

In attempts to control weeds in rice, much effort has been focused on rice allelopathy research for more than 30 years. Among screening methods that have been developed, some estimate the allelopathic potential of various rice cultivars in a limited time and space, which is less costly and can be conducted year round. Rice allelopathy activity is variety dependent and origin dependent, where Japonica rice shows greater allelopathic activity than Indica and Japonica-Indica hybrids. Allelopathic characteristics in rice are quantitatively inherited and several allelopathy-involved traits have been identified. Numerous phytotoxins such as cytokinins, diterpenoids, fatty acids, flavones, glucopyranosides, indoles, momilactones (A and B), oryzalexins, phenols, phenolic acids, resorcinols and stigmastanols have been identified and determined as growth inhibitors in rice. However, the fate and actual modes of action of these compounds as well as other potent rice phytotoxins in nature are not well understood. The question of which compounds play a major role in rice allelopathy has remained obscure; however, rice allelopathy might be attributable to the interaction of all present allelochemicals. Despite locating genes determining or involving allelopathy in rice having attracted much effort, the introduction of these genes into target rice cultivars has not yet been achieved. Success in breeding new rice cultivars having good weed-suppressing ability would benefit farmers in rice-cultivating countries and play an important role in sustainable agricultural production.

The effect of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) on physiological and molecular level responses were studied in Arabidopsis thaliana. The seedlings were exposed to different concentrations of CuONPs (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 mg/L) for 21 days in half strength Murashige and Skoog medium. The plant biomass significantly reduced under different concentrations (2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 mg/L) of CuONPs stress. Exposure to 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 mg/L of CuONPs has resulted in significant reduction of total chlorophyll content. The anthocyanin content significantly increased upon exposure to 10, 20, 50, and 100 mg/L of CuONPs. Increased lipid peroxidation was observed upon exposure to 5, 10, and 20 mg/L of CuONPs and amino acid proline content was significantly high in plants exposed to 10 and 20 mg/L of CuONPs. Significant reduction in root elongation was observed upon exposure to 0.5-100 mg/L of CuONPs for 21 days. Exposure to CuONPs has resulted in retardation of primary root growth, enhanced lateral root formation, and also resulted in loss of root gravitropism. Staining with phloroglucionol detected the deposition of lignin in CuONPs-treated roots. Histochemical staining of leaves and roots of CuONPs-exposed plants with nitroblue tetrazolium and 3'3'-diaminobenzidine showed a concentration-dependant increase in superoxide and hydrogen peroxide formation in leaves and roots of CuONPs-exposed plants. Cytotoxicity was observed in root tips of CuONPs-exposed plants as evidenced by increased propidium iodide staining. Real-time PCR analysis showed significant induction of genes related to oxidative stress responses, sulfur assimilation, glutathione, and proline biosynthesis under CuONPs stress.

Hull extracts from 91 cultivated rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L.) were used to determine their allelopathic potential on seed germination and seedling growth of barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crusgalli P. Beauv. var. oryzicola Ohwi). The allelopathic effects of various concentrations of hot and warm water hull extracts from selected cultivars were also investigated. In the initial screening the ‘SR31’ extract inhibited germination 59%. The length and dry weight of roots were more affected by hull extract than the shoots. The greatest total seedling length and dry weight inhibition was from the ‘Janganbyeo’ warm extracts and was 75 and 96%, respectively. Rice cultivars demonstrating significant allelopathic potential were compared using varying concentrations with a hot or warm extraction procedure. The two extraction procedures displayed different ultra violet (UV) absorption, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and osmotic potential. Warm extracts exhibited a lower percentage absorbance in the UV range, higher percentage absorbance in the visible range, higher EC (S m−1) and osmotic potential (kPa), and showed lower pH than those of hot extracts. As concentration increased, the warm extracts had a greater inhibitory effect on barnyardgrass germination, seedling growth, weight, and caloric content than the hot extracts. The greatest inhibition occurred when the highest concentration (8 g L−1) warm water extract was applied. These results suggest that rice hull extracts may be a source of natural herbicide, and warm water may extract more allelochemicals than hot water. There may be genetic differences among rice cultivars for allelopathic potential on barnyardgrass. The breeding of rice cultivars with greater allelopathic potential may be possible.
