Bu çalışma, Tanzimat Dönemi'nde etkili olmuş milliyetçilik ideolojisi üzerinden dönemin erkeklik anlayışını kavramaya yöneliktir. Bu kavrayışa, Tanzimat Edebiyatı temelinde, yine bu dönemin ve milliyetçilik ideolojisinin sembollerinden biri haline gelmiş Namık Kemal'in Vatan Yahut Silistre adlı oyununun analizi üzerinden ulaşılmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu bağlamda, arzu ve arzu nesnesinin üretiminin eş zamanlı bir üretim olduğuna dair Deleuzyen bir arzu kavramı tartışması paralelinde, Tanzimat dönemi erkeğinin inşası bir arzu nesnesi olarak vatan bağlamında incelenmiş ve vatan aşkının toplum içinde erkeklik hiyerarşisini belirleyici bir kavram olarak önemine dikkat çekilmiştir. Tüm bu analizler çerçevesinde bir iktidar söylemi olarak milliyetçiliğin toplumsal cinsiyetle ilişkisinin karşılıklı kurucu bir ilişki niteliği taşıdığı gösterilmiş olacaktır. Bu bağlamda, bugün ırkçı yansımalarıyla rahatsız edici boyutlarda varlık gösteren milliyetçiliği ele alırken toplumsal cinsiyet boyutunun göz ardı edilmemesi gerektiğinin de altı çizilmiş olacaktır.
Bir sorun olarak erkek şiddetinin çözümüne ilişkin girişim ve tahayyüllerde erkek kategorisi çoğunlukla sadece sorunla ilişkili olarak ele alınır. Öte yandan bizzat erkeklerin kendisini de bu mücadelelerde pek görmez ve de duymayız. Halbuki çözüme yönelik herhangi bir çaba sorunun sorumlu faillerinin dönüşümünden geçer ve bunun da ilk adımı çözümden ziyade sorunu tanımaktır. Bu sebeple, çalışmanın temel sorunsalını bir sorun olarak erkek şiddeti ile erkekler nasıl ilişkilenmektedir sorusu oluşturur. Bu doğrultuda, çalışmada Bianet’in 2018 yılında gerçekleştirdiği 52 Hafta 52 Erkek, Tesadüf Değil Erkek Şiddeti isimli projesinde erkeklerin ürettiği şiddet ve erkeklikler hakkında yazan 52 metin eleştirel söylem analiziyle erkek öznelliği, şiddetle ilişkilenme stratejileri ve çözüm tahayyülleri şeklinde üç başlık altında incelenmiştir. Bu bağlamda, çalışma feminizm ve erkekler arasında kurulabilecek bir ittifakın peşinde, erkek şiddeti ile bir sorun olarak ilişkilenebilen ve kendini ötekine açan bir erkek öznelliğinin imkanlarını tartışmıştır.
