Nanobubbles in liquids are mysterious gaseous objects with exceptional stability. They promise a wide range of applications, but their production is not well controlled and localized. Alternating polarity electrolysis of water is a tool that can control the production of bulk nanobubbles in space and time without generating larger bubbles. Using the schlieren technique, the detailed three-dimensional structure of a dense cloud of nanobubbles above the electrodes is visualized. It is demonstrated that the thermal effects produce a different schlieren pattern and have different dynamics. A localized volume enriched with nanobubbles can be separated from the parent cloud and exists on its own. This volume demonstrates buoyancy, from which the concentration of nanobubbles is estimated as 2 × 10 m. This concentration is smaller than that in the parent cloud. Dynamic light scattering shows that the average size of nanobubbles during the process is 60-80 nm. The bubbles are observed 15 minutes after switching off the electrical pulses but their size is shifted to larger values of about 250 nm. Thus, an efficient way to generate and control nanobubbles is proposed.

Water electrolysis performed in microsystems with a fast change of voltage polarity produces optically invisible nanobubbles containing H2 and O2 gases. In this form the gases are able to the reverse reaction of water formation. Here we report extreme phenomena observed in a millimeter-sized open system. Under a frequency of driving pulses above 100 kHz the process is accompanied by clicking sounds repeated every 50 ms or so. Fast video reveals that synchronously with the click a bubble is growing between the electrodes which reaches a size of 300 μm in 50 μs. Detailed dynamics of the system is monitored by means of a vibrometer by observing a piece of silicon floating above the electrodes. The energy of a single event is estimated as 0.3 μJ and a significant part of this energy is transformed into mechanical work moving the piece. The observations are explained by the combustion of hydrogen and oxygen mixture in the initial bubble with a diameter of about 40 μm. Unusual combustion mechanism supporting spontaneous ignition at room temperature is responsible for the process. The observed effect demonstrates a principal possibility to build a microscopic internal combustion engine.

Lack of fast and strong actuators to drive microsystems is well recognized. Electrochemical actuators are considered attractive for many applications but they have long response time (minutes) due to slow gas termination. Here an electrochemical actuator is presented for which the response time can be as short as 1ms. The alternating polarity water electrolysis is used to drive the device. In this process only nanobubbles are formed. The gas in nanobubbles can be terminated fast due to surface assisted reaction between hydrogen and oxygen that happens at room temperature. The working chamber of the actuator contains concentric titanium electrodes; it has a diameter of 500 µm and a height of 8 µm. The chamber is sealed by a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane of 30µm thick. The device is characterized by an interferometer and a fast camera. Cyclic operation at frequency up to 667 Hz with a stroke of about 30% of the chamber volume is demonstrated. The cycles repeat themselves with high precision providing the volume strokes in picoliter range. Controlled explosions in the chamber can push the membrane up to 90 µm.

Combustion reactions quench in small volumes due to fast heat escape via the volume boundary. Nevertheless, the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen was observed in nano-and micro-bubbles. The bubbles containing a mixture of gases were produced in microsystems using electrochemical decomposition of water with a fast switching of voltage polarity. In this paper, we review our experimental results on the reaction in micro-and nano-bubbles and provide their physical interpretation. Experiments were performed using microsystems of different designs. The process was observed with a stroboscope and with a vibrometer. The latter was used to measure the gas concentration in the electrolyte and to monitor pressure in a reaction chamber covered with a flexible membrane. Information on the temperature was extracted from the Faraday current in the electrolyte. Since the direct observation of the combustion is complicated by the small size and short time scale of the events, special attention is paid to the signatures of the reaction. The mechanism of the reaction is not yet clear, but it is obvious that the process is surface dominated and happens without significant temperature increase.

Experimental evidence is presented that combustion can ignite at room temperature spontaneously inside microbubbles filled with mixture of hydrogen and oxygen. We perform water electrolysis in a closed microchamber by voltage pulses of alternating polarity at repetition frequencies ≥100 kHz to pump the gases rapidly into the electrolyte and produce extreme supersaturation with both gases. After a delay of 300−600 μs, we observe stroboscopically microbubbles of 5−20 μm in diameter that appear in between the electrodes for several microseconds. Each event is accompanied by a pressure jump of 0.1−1 bar that is measured interferometrically. The pressure jumps are attributed to combustion of the gases in the microbubbles.

Using different experimental techniques we visualize a cloud of gas in water that is produced electrochemically by the alternating polarity process. Liquid enriched with gas does not contain bubbles strongly scattering visible light but its refractive index changes significantly near the electrodes. The change of the refractive index is a collective effect of bulk nanobubbles with a diameter smaller than 200 nm. Any alternative explanation fails to explain the magnitude of the effect. Spatial structure of the cloud is investigated with the optical lever method. Its dynamics is visualised observing optical distortion of the electrode images or using differential interference contrast method. The cloud covers concentric electrodes, in a steady state it is roughly hemispherical with a size two times larger than the size of the electrode structure. When the electrical pulses are switched off the cloud disappears in less than one second. The total concentration of gases can reach very high value estimated as 3.5 × 1020 cm−3 that corresponds to an effective supersaturation of 500 and 150 for hydrogen and oxygen, respectively.

Forces induced by quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field control adhesion phenomena between rough solids when the bodies are separated by distances of approximately 10 nm. However, this distance range remains largely unexplored experimentally in contrast with the shorter (van der Waals forces) or the longer (Casimir forces) separations. The reason for this is the pull-in instability of the systems with the elastic suspension that poses a formidable limitation. In this paper we propose a genuine experimental configuration that does not suffer from the short distance instability. The method is based on the adhered cantilever, whose shape is sensitive to the forces acting near the adhered end. The general principle of the method, its possible realization, and feasibility are extensively discussed. The dimensions of the cantilever are determined by the maximum sensitivity to the forces. If the adhesion is defined by strong capillary or chemical interactions, the method loses its sensitivity. Special discussion is presented for the determination of the minimum distance between the rough solids upon contact, and for the compensation of the residual electrostatic contribution. The proposed method can be applied to any kind of solids (metals, semiconductors, or dielectrics) and to any intervening medium (gas or liquid).
