[reaction: see text] Electroreduction of styrenes or alkyl methacrylates in the presence of aliphatic acid anhydrides or N-acylimidazoles with an undivided cell equipped with zinc electrodes as the anode and the cathode brought about novel one-pot vicinal double C-acylation to afford the corresponding 1,4-diketones in satisfactory yields.

Treatment of aromatic alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds with Mg turnings in the presence of acid anhydrides/TMSCl or acyl chlorides in DMF brought about a facile and efficient cross-coupling to give C-acylation products, which are useful 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds, in good to excellent yields in a regio- and stereoselective manner. The reaction may be initiated by electron transfer from magnesium to the substrates.

Electroreduction of series of γ-ethynl ketones in dimethylformamide gave the cyclization products, 2-methylenecyclopentanols, as the sole product in excellent yeilds. furthermore, this electrochemical techniqe was applied to a new synthesis of bicyclic alcohols with an exocyclic double bond adjacent to a bridgehed hydroxy group.

Facile O-Silylation of Tertiary Alcohols in the Presence of Mg-Metal. -A mild, facile, and efficient approach for the O-silylation of alcohols including tertiary alcohols and alcohols containing base-labile substituents is developed.
