ResumenEl concepto de formas organizacionales híbridas resulta clave para las investigaciones empíricas realizadas en el marco de la Nueva Economía Institucional. Las formas híbridas suelen considerarse un avance de dicho programa, sin embargo, aquí se argumentará lo contrario: este concepto evidencia limitaciones en las hipótesis fundamentales de aquel programa de investigaciones económicas.En este trabajo se muestra cómo el concepto de formas híbridas es utilizado para interpretar una realidad socioeconómica que desborda los límites de las formas mercantiles de coordinación económica. Luego se mostrará que ello, en el marco de la Nueva Economía Institucional, supone una paradoja insalvable. Finalmente se ensayan nuevas hipótesis para superar esta limitación y se muestran las consecuencias de este problema sobre dos investigaciones empíricas que desbordaron los límites de las formas organizacionales hibridas.

La dimensión territorial es consustancial al pensamiento estructuralista latinoamericano, el cual objetó las metáforas espaciales que componían las principales corrientes del pensamiento económico. Las conceptualizaciones de las relaciones centro-periferia no se limitaron a la formulación de hipótesis ad hoc a los núcleos conceptuales preexistentes. Por el contrario, buscaron captar la especificidad de la periferia como un proceso histórico particular de modernización y estructuración social. Sin embargo, las relaciones territoriales de carácter subnacional o, dicho de otro modo, la cuestión regional, tuvieron un peso menor y constituyeron un genuino interrogante que interpeló dicha perspectiva. Para el presente trabajo se trazó el objetivo de analizar el desarrollo de dicho debate tomando como criterio de lectura su relación con las principales hipótesis estructuralistas. Se concluye que el debate estuvo marcado por un alejamiento sistemático de dichas bases teóricas, que dejó la cuestión regional como un problema pendiente de resolución.
Investigaciones destacadas sobre la industria manufacturera tendieron a observa su organización en sistemas territoriales cualitativamente diferenciados. Frente a ello el trabajo analiza comparativamente cómo la nueva ortodoxia regionalista, la teoría de la regulación y el enfoque de variedades de capitalismos conceptualizaron la especificidad de los sistemas industriales y, por lo tanto, su variedad cualitativa. De esta comparación emergen consideraciones críticas orientadas a mostrar la dificultad persistente para conceptualizar la variedad cualitativa de los sistemas económicos. El trabajo argumenta que ésta se apoya en una posición básica y compartida según la cual la diferenciación social es el resultado de la hibridación de realidades sociales exteriores entre sí. En este modelo, la variedad socioeconómica y territorial se disuelve en la contingencia volviendo estéril a las teorías frente al momento decisivo de la variedad en sí, histórica, concreta y observable en los sistemas industriales territorializados.
