Las obras literarias de Copi parecen haber encontrado una más amplia recepción crítica en las últimas décadas, y esto quizá se deba a recientes cambios culturales en relación con las cuestiones de género sexual. En sus obras teatrales y narrativas, usa procedimientos ficcionales que muestran el carácter inestable de la subjetividad y de las identidades sexuales. En ese camino estético, son desestabilizadas tanto la heterosexualidad como la homosexualidad. Sus personajes parecen ser trans (mucho antes de que esa denominación se popularizara) que representan modos de existencia que ponen en entredicho la posibilidad de hablar de una esencia interior y natural, así como de su expresión exterior correlativa.
La obra de Copi (Raúl Damonte, 1939-1987) se encuentra atravesada por una problematización constante de la identidad, especialmente desde el punto de vista de las configuraciones corporales y de los géneros sexuales. La descomposición subjetiva, sostenida estéticamente por esa inestabilidad identitaria, depende en gran medida del teatro, que, si bien no fue la única actividad que Copi llevó a cabo, encuentra un lugar central en su producción. Por eso se habla aquí del concepto de teatralidad, cuyas “fronteras” determinan la desestabilización identitaria: esto se verifica en una ficción (teatral y narrativa) que pone el énfasis en elementos relacionados con los mecanismos, procedimientos y recursos teatrales; de este modo, las identidades (y con ellas los cuerpos y los géneros), se transforman siguiendo una mecánica que es propia del teatro y, viceversa, ellas resultan imprescindibles en la elaboración de esa poética “teatral”. De un modo lateral en la tesis, se aborda el problema identitario relacionado con la nacionalidad, cuyas “fronteras” también son problematizadas artísticamente por este autor.
